Educational Psychologists and Bullying

    Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right place for the post, if not then mods feel free to move it elsewhere. I was just wondering, what is the role of educational psychologists with regard to bullying in schools and dealing with children demonstrating aggression. Are children diagnosed with emotional and behaviour disorders by an educational psychologist? What interventions do educational psychologists contribute to?

Most ed. psychologists cannot diagnose EBD, but in order for say, the HSE to do so, the HSE often requests an educational assessment as a pre--requisite .The ed. psychologist -if they are with NEPS can help with strategies for helping the child in school and at home.

Thanks very much for the reply. What would the educational assessments involve?

This next one is a tough question and I've looked high and low but to no avail. Are there any disorders that are specifically related to aggressive behaviour or would it be considered acceptable to say that a child suffers from emotional disturbance without specifying an exact disorder?

In the educational psychology books that I have consulted, there has been no reference to any emotional and behavioural disorders specifically related to aggression. The textbooks tend to have emotional and behavioural disorders as a heading and primarily focus on the emotions experienced by sufferers such as depression and anxiety but never really mention the exact disorders where aggression is most prevalent

An educational assessment would include, amongst other things, tests to identify performance and verbal IQ such as the WISC and would look at information on concerns that parents and the school would have and seek to identify how best to support the child.

I'm not sure how to answer part two of your question as any case I have heard about where EBD was diagnosed was done through a multi-disciplinary team -such as the HSE ones. I'd imagine that a ed. psychologist would only be the starting point for such a case.
