Single storey extension to 2 storey house

Just looking for opinions really. I live in a 2 storey house but I anticipate that I won't be able to get upstairs easily inside 10 years due to declining health. I have worries about extensions that they never really work: cracks, dampness, leaks etc. I have a back garden that could take a small extension which could have a shower room/ toilet and a bedroom. Any opinions on extension idea or other solutions?

if getting upstairs will be an issue would you consider a stair lift?

I have looked at them but the stairs is narrow and steep. It is an option though.

why not consider an internal 2 person lift? Could be expensive but worth it

It strikes me that you don't need an extension for space - merely for access. An extension is an expensive solution to the problem.

I'd be looking at the possibility of remodelling the stairwell such as to permit a stair lift to be installed. Far, far cheaper/less trouble than an extension
