Smart Thermostat Options

    Hi Folks,

We are considering using the SEAI grant to upgrade our heating to a new condensing oil boiler.

Our plumber will also create 3 zones for us (Upstairs, Downstairs and Hot Water) using wireless valves he said.

When / if we do this we want to have a smart thermostat setup (currently thinking Hive)

My question is can products live Hive use the wireless valves as zones? Or what are my options? Any other solid alternatives to Hive or Nest and what pips what?

    Thanks,

In my view the Hive system is perfect for your needs - but do tell the plumber you are planning to use it before he orders the zone valves. The Hive receivers will switch any standard 230V zone valve on and off, then use the Aux contacts in the zone valves to enable the boiler so it only runs when one or more zone valves is open.

The Hive system can be bought with or without installation included, so discuss with the plumber in advance. You may need an electrician also.

I might be wrong, but I think you'll need Hive Multizone for this, as you want to control more than one zone.

I think you could also do this with two Nest thermostats, one for downstairs and hot water, and the other for upstairs.

I haven't used either system, so can't really comment on which is better, but I am planning on installing a Nest soon for our heating. Electric Ireland do them for €99 on switching, including install.

There is a deal on Amazon for the Hive system if you go this route.

Annoyingly good deal we can't afford to buy right today though... Just in planning. Thanks for flagging it.

    Thanks for the advice all.

    Just to update:
We finished the job last week with a new Grant Vortex Condensing Boiler installed, new properly insulated hot water tank, some remote controlled values and a Hive multizone kit we got on sale from Amazon.

The piping already in existence lent itself to the plumber being able to retrofit in the zones without doing any major overhaul so we now have the upstairs / downstairs and hot water zones in the house with the nice efficient boiler, should make a big change for us.

For anyone's reference job cost 2.5k for everything EXCLUDING the Hives which we bought outselves... we should get 750 of that back via the SEAI grant.
