Cover for Water Tank/Overflow Pipe?

Hi all

I need to put on a cover for main water tank in the attic.

But there is an overflow pipe (curved) that, if needed, appears to empty into the cold tank, so if i put on a cover for the tank, this overflow pipe has nowhere to go? Plumbing probably goes back to the 70's

Maybe I'm reading it wrong. Any ideas? Thanks

Extend the overflow pipe past the cover

Drill a 2" diameter hole in the new cover in the appropriate location and extend the copper pipe with a matching sized pirce of copper pipe.
Cut the the extended piece so it terminates a couple of inches below the cover but ensure that it is well above the water line.

A plumber I know used old election posters to cover these tanks, usually easy and cheap to get and cut.
