    Hi All,
First time posting in this form so please bear with me. We are with Sky at the min paying 105 a month. Virgin Media want to dig up our garden and have offered free broadband for 5 years. The guy who offered the deal told us to keep tv and phone with sky??? Is this a good offer? On our bills from sky we don't seem to be paying much for broadband anyway? Thanks, dueaug.

If you keep the phone with Sky there would be no saving, thats where their largest cost comes from (the presence of the line).

Talk to Virgins provisioning, you should be able to get a better deal.

Virgin broadband is absolutely excellent. Although SKY TV is better I'd be pushing for 5 years broadband and TV.

Thanks lads. Waiting for them to get back to me as the guy digging the gardens says he can't offer more than the broadband. He says we won't make money or get much from them as it's a one time thing. (digging the garden) it would be different if they had to attach something to the side of the house and keep upgrading it or whatever?? They are offering a special for new customers at the min for 6 months and I'm hoping to get it for a year instead. Ah well will wait and see what happens.

Why do they need to dig up your garden? Is it solely to provide service to your house?

Hi lawred2 they need to dig up our garden in order to bring the cables from the estate beside us into our estate and on through to the next one. It's not just us getting the service it would be a lot more houses!

Remember if you say no, your neighbours dont get it. I was in that situation and wasnt exactly his biggest fan after that.

Cancel sky altogether, reorder with another bank account in the house
Sky talk anytime 30 euro per month, Sky variety bundle 39 euro per month with free 32" samsung tv and sky Q box. Get your free broadband for 5 years from Virgin. Happy days.

Free for life. The lot. No exceptions. How many houses will they serve if they can access your estate?

Free for life. No exceptions. How many houses will they have access to if you grant them access?

Phone is bundled with broadband anyway so they would include it. I know people that got this.

Depends on how intrusive the work is. If it's just a cable running through and no other equipment in your property that they need to access - then €3000 worth of broadband/phone is a good deal.

Did you get anything in writing from them about this offer?

Is the guy you spoke to a VM employee or a contractor?

You say its a one time thing but what happens if they need to access the cable in the future in the event of a disruption to service?

Have you asked them about restoring your garden after the digging?

What about insurance implications etc etc? Make sure and sit down with someone from VM and discuss these issues - don't be stampeded into any agreement.

Make a formal appointment with the VM representative and if you can have someone with you for it. And take time to think about whatever their formal offer is.

Remember VM are part of a multi-national company with huge revenues - you are entitled to expect a proper professional approach from them with a view to a formal agreement at the end of the process.

They are asking you to provide them with facilities which will allow them to make money for a considerable time into the future - they are not a charity whom you are "helping out"

Whatever you agree to make sure you get a signed agreement and a contact with a direct phone number to avoid hassle in the future.

Well then you should be asking for much more than a token gesture..

As I said earlier... Free for life is what I'd be looking for.

Would you be liable if you lawnmowered it somehow?

I know they probably big deep and duct it properly but if anything happened to it would you be liable and would you be able to charge them to fix it perhaps?

I know of a guy who has a box in his lawn, that controls all the broadband for his road. Free broadband, no time limit.

Wireless ISPs who put repeaters on farmer's cow sheds on high sites, get free broadband for life. I know of two in my area ... and them buggers get a 5Mbps/3Mbps package ... I'm so jealous!!! :D

When you say dig up do you mean dig a trench of several metres? They may be able to use a mole which would only require holes at the beginning and end of the route. I would try to get a better deal from them but would be willing to eventually accept the original offer. As ED E said you don't want to be "that guy" that deprives all your neighbours of decent broadband.
