Do you have VAG COM or VCDS? It could have been wiped when repaired and needs to be reprogrammed.

Mechanic tried to read errors but couldn't connect to the ecu, ...I was told to just install the ecu without reprogramming

Sounds like the TCM (Transmission Control Module) was damaged during repair if you cannot connect to it! Disconnect it and see if all the pins are intact.

We checked the pins and all seem fine...we checked a different ecu from different model and still no conection but at least we were able to see the gears on the screen...do you know which pin is responsible for TCM?

Mechanic is using not a original VAGcom. Can this be a problem with connecting to ecu?

Could be. What year is the car?

It's 2004...he was able to connect before I sent it to repair...

2004 should be fine on a non-original VAG COM/cable. Newer cars require the full version that's €300+ and requires a special cable.
