insulation behind radiators - and oven?

Hi. I have put the reflective insulation behind the rads in the house. It's the kind that sticks to the walls rather than the sheet you drop down the back. The house was built in 2000 but it cools down very quickly. The plumber told us the boiler is likely older than the house so I decided to do what I can to insulate the house.

    3 questions:
    1. Does the reflective insulation behind the rads make much difference in a relatively new house?

2 is there much difference between the stuff for a fiver a roll and the still for 15 a roll?

3 would it be safe to put behind the oven?

    Cheers
    El D

    1. Age of house irrelevant, that stuff is rubbish.
    2. See 1.
    3. Why would you do that:confused:

the theory is that the foil reflects the heat back into the room and stop it passing out the wall

in reality its like putting your hand into a stream to stop the water.
your hand will stop some water only for it to pass around it as the heat will pass out around the foil

there is no substitute for insulating properly

    El D.

Do a complete insulation makeover starting in the roof. At least 150mm of fibre roll between the rafters and another 150mm run across them. Insulate the loft hatch. Do you have double glazing? cavity wall insulation? Good close fitting and draught free external doors? All external to internal pipe/cable work insulated properly? Are your floors insulated? Borrow or rent an infrared camera to see where your heat is going.

Do all this and get a good efficient boiler and there is no need for foil.

    In answer to your questions.

    1. It doesn't work
    2. It doesn't work
    3. Pointless.

I'm renting so I can only do superficial changes.

Even so I can check a few of those. I now the loft is insulated and double glazing. The doors are only ok.

Pity to hear the reflective stuff doesn't work.

Cheers for the tips. I'll keep those in mind for when I buy my own house one of these fine days
