cracks in walls

If I wanted to get large cracks in walls checked out, is a surveyor the correct professional to do this ? I asked a builder but he gave a vague response and it was clear that he wasn't sure.

I would advise an engineer for anything structural

Get an engineer in who will inspect the cracks and place tell tails and monitor the cracks for a period of time.
