    Hi all
I know this has been discussed previously but the scene seems to have changed lately.

I want to buy a hilux crew cab for private use but very few insurers are willing to quote me, the one quote i got was for 1600 quid from libertywhich is ridiculous. Has anyone any tips on insuring a commercial vehicle privately, who is the best/cheapest?

    Sound

Just get commercial insurance it will cover your private use also.

Tried to insure my Connect as a private vehicle. Answer: N!O!
Was advised that no insurance company in Ireland will insure a commercial vehicle for any money. Asked to be given a letter of refusal, was told not applicable in this case, take a hike.
Called van insurance specialists and was told they will not insure commercial vehicles purely for personal use.
So if you want to insure a commercial vehicle as private, the answer is "forget it"
It needs to be insured as commercial and private use, for any given definition of "commercial activity" if you get my drift. Other than that it's an uninsurable driveway adornment.

ah great. so what do you need these days to insure something as a commercial? i presume you need a vat number or a ltd company or something? has anyone set one up purely for this reason and is it difficult?

You just need the price of it in your pocket, nothing more.

Yep. It will be insured to carry your own goods. Be that all Chrissie shopping from Tesco or bags of cement ;)

I rang an insurance company specialising in vans and stated that I use the van to do jobs for my employer. No VAT number needed. Do not say you transport anything, because that is also a no-no. (How fcuked up is that?) Just say you need to carry your own tools and supplies. Then they might grudgingly give you insurance. Cost me 640 for my Connect.

    Edit:
There do seem to be plenty of people with commercial 4x4s who have no problem getting insurance, so this is just based on my experiences.

That quote of 1600 is ridiculous , but by no means unusual or even very high nowadays. Sad but true.

So i spoke to insuremyvan, they said you can only get commercial insurance if your primary use is for a commercial purpose. Im sure everyone abuses this but id like to suss out more legit options. Has anyone had any luck insuring commercials privately? I can imagine the insurance companies being pretty picky if I had to make a claim on a commercial policy

Lots of customers tell the company 'what they want to hear' just to get around the private use.

Within the last fortnight, 2 customers asked me for private use on vans as they retired. One of them I actually had declined him the previous day for deliveries of gas/coal but thought I was just call centre staff. Other one owns a shop near me and uses van to delivery to customers homes ( he would have got cover for same easily if he had asked genuinely as 'own goods'

Its a complete and utter fcuking joke that vans can't be insured for private use in this fcuking country. The whole system is sh*t. The choice is, well there is no choice. If Mr private citizen needs to drive a van, there simply is no legit choice, simple as.
At this stage a very large proportion of private van drivers (like 100%) simply have to lie through their teeth to get their poxy vans insured.
Its totally fcuking fcuked in the head, its not like we want to insure a battle tank.
I'll check the situation in Germany and get back. Its most likely "a Ford Transit as daily driver? Yes that will be fine, your premium will be €350."
