The manual will tell you how much energy is used on each cycle. Our dishwashers Eco program takes ages too but the water isn't as hot. Still gets the stuff clean though.

Sometimes you don't wanna wait 3 hours!

Is that eco-nomy or eco-logical? My machine has "Economy" and "Energy Save", the latter of which is designed to exploit water from the hot water feed if you have one connected. I could imagine that using that programme with only a cold water feed would require the machine to first heat the cold water.

This sounds more like it.. Dishes weren't hot coming out but were clean...

Yeah, I don't think it dries the dishes as much as usual either.

If it's anything like my Whirlpool 6th Sense machine, the auto setting will sense how dirty the waste water is and adjust the program length accordingly, only using as much water and energy as required. I leave it on this 99% of the time and it usually takes around 1h 20m or thereabouts. I also have an auto intensive setting I use if stuff is particularly dirty, which takes around 1h 50m.

Yeah, like the vast majority of household appliances, most people will only use 1 or 2 programs or features, and the others will remain unused despite sounding so handy while perusing the specs when they were bought.
