Brother is moving to Dundalk next year from Newry and is thinking now of buying a new or 1 -2 year old car, Maybe Q7 or x5,
He wont have any vrt to pay but think he needs to keep it for 12 months before he can sell it.any ideas on what would be an ideal car to choose.

A Q7 or X5 has a very limited market for purchase given the running costs associated with them like main dealer servicing, poor mpg etc. If it's to make money it would be a better idea looking at something like a high spec Audi A4, Ford Focus, VW Golf etc, basically a car that sells high numbers down here.

thing is VRT on a 2016 X5 is 30k while the A4 is about 6k im told

Nah, emissions on x5 are relatively low, the only model you'll sell easily down here either way is the 2.0d S-drive, which only has vrt of €11k for a 2016.

Even at that, buyers like buying from main dealer as they get a 2 year used car warranty.

But you can't sell it for a year so a good €10-€15k plus is lost in depreciation.

hang on, we are talking about 4 pot diesels, that are cheap to tax and fuel here. I didnt say cheap to run, because depreciation and interest is serious money. yeah you would have to do your homework, makes absolute sense to me though, the only thing is, it may be hard to sell a car, that value, privately and you have to keep it a year, AFAIK, so that will wipe a certain chunk off the car. It is absolutely worth doing in my opinion, just the question is, do you want to maximise return or more interested in getting a car you brother actually wants to drive and return is not as important...

this would have been a hell of a lot more profitable, before sterling tanked...

Yes that's why they give you the exemption but you can't sell for a year. I just think the Q7 or X5 will be far too much of a risk getting a buyer for, too much money tied up in something you could be 6 months or a year trying to offload.

Revenue require that you own the vehicle a minimum of 6months in the foreign country this being Northern Ireland in your brothers case.

They require a lot of documentation though.
Tell him to keep all diesel receipts from Newry, and an electricity bill/bank statement here and there.

From the Revenue leaflet: you must have had possession of and have actually used the vehicle outside the State for at least 6 months before your transfer to Ireland. Make sure his figures add up.
