There's enough shìte to wade through here as it is without no mods to clean up the most of it.

I'm not easily offended, I just have no desire to look at dung when I don't have to.

Ah now, go into certain forums and the mods are the most easily offended by strangers.

Without mods you get places like 4chan.

Mods can a,so ruin a website but some level of moderation is required if a website is to succeed.

Usually after being reprimanded somewhere as well, the boards equivalent of the teenage strop.

I gave up posting in a certain forum because the mod was a complete DH. So I don't think you have a point.

No, forums without moderation are ruined by spammers, trolls and mentally unhinged idiots who out shout everyone else.

There are lots of good mods on boards, but there are also a number of rubbish ones that destroy specific forums, from ones so afraid of big business they piss themselves at the hint of anyone doing something illegal to pathetic little boys more interested in their tiny bit of power and enforcing rules than helping the forums flow.

You must have some form of control over places like these, otherwise it becomes lawless and people do whatever they want. Just like in real life. Where would we be without the police to keep law and order.

but doesn't that go against the "open to all internet" philosophy?

An adult forum does need a moderator(s) as there are enough stupid people who think only of themselves and are not considerate of others, it is not about being offended, it is about decency.
Having mods brings decency to a forum.

Mods are simply a reflection of the Generation Snowflake ideals and principles which have become prevalent throughout society.

Simply offending another poster with your point of view can become grounds for a banning.

If you'd like Boards to be more like the comments beneath a YouTube video, then no mods is a heck of a good idea.

Agreed, quite ridiculous when a mod wades into a rather humorous bit of banter and goes all atomic snowflake.

What has offence got to do with it? I thought it was about standards.

Not sure what this means I am afraid.

For spam and back and forth arguments that completely derail a thread, I think they're needed. But sometimes I've seen people being banned or threads being closed when I didn't think what was said was offensive. I guess it's subjective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,195 ✭✭✭✭jimgoose

No. Online forums have plenty tendency to turn into primate excrement-flinging circuses with moderation, never mind without.

And there are mods with a personal agenda.

Try posting about cyclists breaking the law in the "Commuting" forum - you got no chance!

Moderators are fine as long as their neutral. But when certain moderators take a particular side in a thread and suddenly there's some very selective moderating, that's when it's a problem.

This site's approach to moderation is one of the key reasons as to why boards.ie is doing so spectacularly well.

 I know you do have a few scoops on board.. but have you seen the threads you start in AH on Monday nights?!?

I don't like the modding here at times but they are needed to a certain extent to be fair.

The problem is when you get ones with bias a great example being mod in the politics forum years ago who banned anyone that made even the tiniest critique of Fianna Fail and was ages before he was actually sacked to make it worse despite the carry on.

There's a lot like him around but a lot more subtle on various issues.

Makes it tough on the few that are neutral as they get hassle unfairly.

We should be allowed to attack the poster as well as the post.

I think moderation is becoming increasingly antiquated, and so are websites that don't change in response.

People are getting used to regulating content for themselves.

Imagine Twitter with moderators. I can't even recall everreporting a tweet on there.

It's increasingly frustrating to open a mildly offensive thread on boards.ie, to see that it has been closed with a 'hilarious' mod comment.

That type of activity has an expiry date on the modern internet. It can't last, as we're probably already seeing.

Usually the people that complain are the ones who don't understand how the site works.

Or newbies. Everyone else is obviously pretty ok with it if they are still here. I'm here 11 years and have no real complaints

Yes I agree with that. Sometimes I think a thread has potential and I scroll down to add my comment and ..there's the hilarious mod comment, and it's been closed :/
It's the slightly controversial or insensitive ones I mean, not anything truly vile

Everyone else is obviously pretty ok with it if they are still here.
    But everybody isn't still here.

It doesn't bother me, because I don't tend to get in trouble either way. What bothers me is that probably is one factor affecting the site's falling traffic.

It won't be much consolation to say "everybody is ok with it if they're here" if there's only a few dozen of us here in a couple of years.

I'm not saying moderation is the only factor, but it probably is one of them. People aren't used to being edited and curtailed, dare I say babysat, anymore.

As someone who once modified for a professional sports team's message boards, you have no idea how much ****e gets through on a given day.

Boards would be (even more) unreadable within a few days.

most people use their own name on twitter, unlikely to be as quick to troll I'd say

Look at politics.ie. Sweet Jesus...it goes a bit like
"You're a fcuking shinner shill .... no you're a blueshirt cnut ... listen to the fcuking fianna fail gombeen gobshyte..." etc.

    Mods move things along.

Frankly to me mods are a strange breed. Like Street sweepers that are happy picking up dog**** for free.

it would be interesting if people had to justify reporting posts. And had punishments for reporting posts solely because they disagree with them or were Lil offended babies.

The day I report a post I want a week ban.

I used a message board when I was a teenager that wasn't just not moderated, the admins actively encouraged flaming. It was survival of the fittest, and got boring very quickly. New users were scared off and the regular users eventually stopped abusing each other save for one or two posters that was just tiresome to watch, so that was lame.

As much as I'd like to go mad now and again and fell people exactly what I think, I think all round it's a better system. My only gripe would be inconsistent moderation and how admin seem to choose some topics to "protect".

Which part? I myself have never been in trouble ever with mods so I have no need to worry about their poop scoop.

Do you mean am I sure about being banned for a week if I ever report a post? Yeah you take that quote zip it, lock it, put it in your pocket. I now give you the power to impeach me.
