Locking mechanism for an Aluminium/PVC door.

    Hi all,

I got home this evening to the kids telling me the back door is "stuck". It was closed locked but I managed to open it through a combination of wiggling the handle and turning the key. Whilst open I operated the handle and key to see where the problem was and once I "locked" it again the lower locking mechanism won't re-open regardless of what I try and is now stuck "locked" thus preventing me from closing the door and securing the house tonight.

The door is 7-8 years old and gets a fair bit of daily use so it wouldn't surprise me if the locking mechanism needs to be replaced. Is this something anyone can give me some DIY guidance on or will this require a call out from a door/window specialist and if so I'd appreciate recommendations for someone who specialises in these small domestic repairs. I'm based in Stillorgan BTW.

In the short term should I undo all the philips head screws and remove the entire locking mechanism so I can close the door tonight? The alternative it to use a bungee cord tied to something so the door stays kind of closed tonight. It won't actually close because of the locking mechanism so is creating a big draft into the main living room

    Any/all help appreciated.

    Regards,

    John

spreay loads of wd40 into it.

nobody ever lubricates these. you can get a while longer out of worn mechanism

Too late, took the mechanism off the door in order to "close" it manually tonight using a bungee cord to hold it in place.

It does look fcuked so probably needs to be replaced.

I might have a go at it myself if I can find a new one somewhere.

Think I'll start with Chadwicks and take it from there.

Last night I noticed homebase (in limerick at least) stock a decent amount of handles, locks etc for external doors etc.

I noticed because of course it was the one place I didn't visit when looking for a door handle myself a few months back - I ordered online from here http://www.handlesupplies.ie/lock%20and%20door%20handles%20problems%20solved%20in%20ireland.html which on comparison last night was a little more expensive . they were helpful though - provided good detail about measurement etc so I knew I was ordering the right one.
