Think it all depends on the tax office.

When I first taxed my Hilux, they wanted the rear seats removed and the seat belt mounts taken out. They couldn't understand how I could carry anything otherwise. Didn't really understand what a crew cab was.

Ended up having to show the cargo area to the superviser.

As Plug said above, the whole system is a joke.

    Yes sounds very messy indeed!

Ye Its just I have never owned a van and am toying with the idea of getting one! I am a plumber but back in college at the moment so just do the odd job etc, nixers etc.

    Yeah, similar here :o.

When we moved back from the UK the Hilux seemed to be the all-rounder we needed. Looked at the VRT thing and got that sorted but the Motor Tax is a complete ballax.

is it different by council? I am trying to tax my van but have had to get it weighed and now they are asking for documents to prove I am self employed. Most people i know with vans are in Dublin and have had no issues. I'm in Meath and really am having to jump through hoops.

Why am I not surprised at Meath? They are refusing to tax private cars with a Dublin Reg!

For taxing a van in Dublin you need the following:
A weight docket if the weight is not in the system or the vehicle has changed.
    RF111A
    Original commercial insurance cert
    RF100/RF100A

I sent all those documents to Meath CoCo except the weight docket. They sent them back and asked me to get it weighed and then resend the documents. Did that 2 weeks ago and today got everything back again saying I have to send proof of being self employed or a company and because the weight is different from the record ( by 8kg as far as i can tell) i have to get a new log book too.
I have got a tax clearance cert and hope that is sufficient for them

i suspect they are insisting in a MH reg for anyone living in MH which is the correct procedure.

really? so if you buy from another county you are supposed to register it again?
    I missed that requirement ...

The log book request would be standard enough. It's a case of changing the weight and issuing a new one.

Looking at the Meath CoCo website they do seem to require your entire life story, there's probably some BS law covering them but I'd nearly pay a solicitor to find out if they pulled that with me.
TAXING OF A LIGHT GOODS/COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
Light goods vehicles are vehicles not exceeding 3,500 kg Design Gross Vehicle Weight.
You need the following for the first time taxation of your:
    1. Completed Application Form RF100 (If the vehicle is new you will obtain Form RF100 from your garage or if the vehicle is imported you will obtain it from the National Car Testing Service – www.ncts.ie ) or Form RF100A (available at www.motortax.ie ) if it is your first time taxing the vehicle upon a change of ownership to your name.

    2. Completed Goods Only Declaration Form RF111A (available at www.motortax.ie ) - stamped and witnessed at Garda Station.

    3. Original current Certificate of Insurance which must state that the vehicle concerned is covered for the carriage of goods in the course of the registered owners trade or business. Please note that the name of the policy holder as detailed on the Certificate of Insurance should match the name of the registered owner of the vehicle.

    4. Certificate of Road Worthiness (D.O.E. test) must be current if the vehicle is 1 year old or over. This will automatically show on the NVDF system if vehicle has been tested since October 2013.

    5. Weight Docket & Weigh Masters Certificate from Authorised Weighbridge
(If the vehicle weight does not exceed 1524 kg (Unladen Weight) BOA and this weight is confirmed on the National Vehicle Data File, a weight docket is not required). If the vehicle weight does exceed 1524kg and is different from the previous weight then the Vehicle Registration Certificate (V.R.C.) is required to be surrendered to the Motor Taxation office and a new V.R.C. will be posted out to you from the Department of Transport.
    AND
    6. If the applicant is self-employed or a Company, the original of any of the following must be submitted:
    a) Evidence of Registration for V.A.T.
    b) A Tax Clearance Certificate
    c) The “Notice of Tax Registration Form”.
    d) Notice of Assessment
    e) Self Assessment – letter from Revenue to confirm registration for Self-Assessed Income Tax.

(NOTE: Herd Number is not acceptable)

ANY OF THE DOCUMENTS SUPPLIED UNDER SECTION 6 MUST NOT BE OVER ONE YEAR OLD AND MUST BE ON THE REVENUE COMMISSIONERS HEADED PAPER.
    OR
    6. If the applicant is employed by a Company/Business and is a PAYE worker, the following must be
    submitted:-
Original letter from your employer to state/include:-

    • that the named applicant is an employee
    • the registration number of the vehicle in question
    • that the vehicle is used solely for the carriage of goods in the course of the named applicant’s
    employment with that employer
    • the nature of the business
    • the Company’s Revenue Registration Number
    7. Original evidence of the applicants Income Tax Registration must be submitted, i.e. any correspondence from the Revenue Commissioners dated within the last year showing the applicant’s name, address and PPS No.
The Motor Taxation Office, in its absolute discretion, may require additional information if same is required. The only purpose of requesting any of the items under Section 6 is solely to satisfy the trade or business requirements to tax a goods vehicle.

To renew motor taxation on a goods vehicle currently registered to you the following is required:-
    • Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B or Tax Renewal Form RF100A – forms available at www.motortax.ie
    • Appropriate Fee.
    • The vehicle must have a current Certificate of Roadworthiness where it is one year old or more from the date it was first registered. This will automatically show on NVDF if tested since October 2013.
    • Insurance details - Your Certificate of Insurance must state that the vehicle concerned is covered for the carriage of goods in the course of trade or business.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

obviously I meant on first registration. Everyone knows you can't change the normal numbers once allocated and quite obviously Meath can't refuse to tax a D reg car for someone who lives in Meath..

I am in kildare so hopefully they are not as strict as meath cc.

I talked to a guy last night who taxed an imported vehicle recently in Kildare and said it was pretty straight forward.

He had to do steps 1-5 from above but not 6 and 7!? Which are the sticky steps of course.

Just seems crazy that each council has almost different requirements

Send the weight document and your PPS number, you'll be fine. To get it under the weight you need it has to be driving in, remove all un-necessary crap if ithas to be weighed again (spare wheel, jacks etc)

Yours sincerely, a chap born and bred in Meath, driving Cork registered cars

What documentation do I need to tax my goods vehicle ?
You need the following: (1) Form [ RF100 ], completed. (2) Confirmation of current Insurance details. (3) Fee. (4) A Certificate of Roadworthiness (required every year after once the vehicle is over 1 year old) issued by your test centre, there is no requirement to bring the certificate to the motor tax office, weight docket, and a goods declaration form needs to be included with the application. (5) When the vehicle has been taxed for the first time, a Vehicle Registration Certificate will then be issued to the owner by the Vehicle Registration Unit in due course.

    ^^^^^^^
Taken from Kildare county council website. Seems pretty straight forward by comparison to Meath cc
