Rear ended

Was involved in a rear end collision over the weekend whilst out with the wife & kids, thankfully after getting checked out in the hospital with x-rays etc. I was told it was soft tissue damage only & to make an appointment for physio & take painkillers as prescribed etc.

Whilst I was being taken away by ambulance my wife swapped the details with the other driver, & she then drove the car home. Later the other drivers husband called up to take some photos of the damage to the rear of our car.

When I got home from the hospital later I had a quick look at the rear of my car & the bumper is cracked across the top & the rear face of the boot panel is dented. The boot opens & closes without difficulty so I'm hoping the damage is minimal & restricted to the bumper & boot.

I've genuinely never been involved in any road accidents so other than contacting my own insurer am not quite sure if I need to do anything else?
I gave them as many details as I could, including the garda details etc. and was told to wait for a rep from their claims department to make contact with me. I do however have the other drivers policy details & was wondering is there any onus on me to contact their insurer also? OR should I just sit & wait for them to contact me?

You could contact them and let them know about the crash, sometimes the other party might not inform their own insurance company at all which can cause delays for you.

From my experience of being rear ended.

-> Other party asked me to go to a garage and get an assessment.
-> Brought and got quoted for 1600 euro
-> Rang other party and they advised me to call their insurance company
-> Rang Axa and they asked me to go get assessed again.
-> Assessor rang me a few days later and offered me cash to write off the car.

I would always try and work it out amicably with the other party, as no-one wants to be "that guy"

Axa also covered my hospital visit and scans. I was fine but if you have soft tissue damage it might be a different story.

I'd be inclined to give this option if it was just the car damaged, but when taken away in ambulance and there is soft tissue damage I would be going through insurance.

    Plus 1.

Deal with insurance on this. You can't be expecting the other party to lodge cash into your account every time you need to see a doctor, or have physio done.

get the quote from garage (main dealer preferably as they will based quote on oem parts)

I was rear ended few years ago, what looked like bumper damage turned to be 4k damage, boot floor creased in some places, insured wrote off the car and I got some nice cheque.
