Its a family day out for us with myself and the wife in the main race and the kids taking part in the u8s and u10s. Signed up myself and the wife. Any idea when the kids race goes up? Its not a big issue, but if I could get it all done in advance it would be great. One year I forgot and required the help of someone on this forum to get me in late.

You might be lucky and get parking in the village but can be hard, the estate I live in is about 5 minute walk away from the start line and you will get parking no problem.

You're going to be so disappointed with every other race's goodie bag in the future. This one is the best!!!

no, there is one uphill, on Watermill Road, at about the 4 mile mark, but apart from that pretty much flat or downhill

Is it reverting back to the old route this year?

No, it's not confirmed yet but looks like very similar to last year with maybe a small change in the park.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

forgot it changed last year! (the one year I didn't run it)

Still fairly flat though, I presume?

Much flatter. Takes out the downhill to the coast and the resultant climb back up at mile 4 to divert in to the park. It does have a long out and back section along the main road in the park, which i'm not a fan of personally but very fair course with regard running fast times.

    Just registered.

Initially wasn't going to when I saw that start time wasn't until 3pm. I like to get my runs done early. However - having completed the 12k's of Christmas today, which didn't begin until 12pm, it was a nice change and I felt a bit more awake for it!

This is the bit that they are talking about changing, maybe just a big loop of the park or something not sure.

Is this PB potential course? How would the course compare to say the Terenure 5 mile course - that's where I have my PB.

    Thanks

Haven't run the new course but I'd say it is a potential PB course once you have the training done. Probably not as fast as Terneure but not too much in the difference. So you could PB here and then PB again in Terenure in May.

I've run faster in Raheny than in Terenure. It's a nice, cold time of year as well, which I think makes for faster times - no chance of it being too warm!

anyone have a Garmin link to the new course?

Here is last years course anyway from Strava

Agreed. The elevation readings are that it's a barely perceptible difference between any one mile:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1034824683

I think they're going to remove some of the down-and-back of the avenue and instead send people in a small loop. I haven't yet seen the final revised course details.

Whatever happens they won't unfortunately be in a position to let the 3rd/4th mile descent to the seafront and 4th/5th mile climb back up Watermill Ave. (Still can't believe the various authorities are still working on the seafront: there'd have been less disturbance to the mudflat wildfowl had a few JCBs been allowed dump a tonne or two of rocks for a 10-15m out by just over 1km long stretch - over where there are already storm drains and various water outlets anyway. Even a Dublin quays walkway - as cycleway - would've been easier to install than all the roadworks done to date).

I was talking to one of the organisers yesterday, and for the most part the course remains as it was laid out last year.

They are planning to will have proper crash barriers dividing the middle of the Avenue, as apparently some people were ducking under the ropes to shorten the route last year.

    Just signed up :D

This is a great race to start the year, just hope they expand the road where we run in the bus lane, as it can't take the numbers it had last year.

If you referring to the Howth Road section (about mile .9 to 1.6), that is going to be difficult, as the road will be down to 1 lane and, it is one of the major roads out / into the city.

Just signed up for first time at this course. Looking at the results from last year, is it a really fast course or is the quality of the runners really high? Sub-30 minutes barely gets you in top 150

Uh-oh. Is a time of 50mins too slow to attempt this race do you think?

Edit - just checked last years race results. I should be fine but ..... it's a big race!!

    Not at all.

Just make sure that you get into you correct pacing group, as it will make for a more enjoyable experience for you, and indeed everyone else.

Cheers. Aiming to go under 30 after a near miss last year in Terenure so fast pace will be a help

As a fairly new convert to the running scene myself Bananleaf I used to have the same thoughts....one thing I have learned is that running is a very inclusive past time and no matter what your pace is the fact you are getting out there is the main thing.....you will get plenty of support from others on the course.

Just be sure to pace yourself correctly at the start and most importantly enjoy yourself!!

Care to say where you live? :P Might help :)

Will be driving to this and don't really know the area so a handy place to park the car would be a good thing. (or should I just arrive extra early and find a cafe nearby for a cuppa tea?)

Last year I parked on Avondale Park with no problems, only a few minutes walk away from the race start.

I signed up there about an hour ago, and you have the choice when signing up. (extra €2 to get it posted to you)

I chose to collect it, as I like to try and arrive a little early and get a feel for what's going on (still very very new to attending these kinda events, and 5 miles (8k?) is the longest i'll have ever done, so half dreading the thoughts of it.

It said on the form though that if you opt for the number to be posted out, you'll have it by the 25th.

This race back in 2010 was the first time I ever ran 5 miles. You'll be grand, there's a lot of support on the course and the atmosphere will carry you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,601 ✭✭✭Wubble Wubble

It was also my first 5 miler, back in 2013. Every level of runner is catered for; there'll be people around you all the way, irrespective of your standard.

Signed up last night, absolutely love this race, one of the best on the calendar for the year! I think that this is my fifth (or sixth?) year in a row to do this one, so well organised and friendly, would strongly recommend it to the serious runner and newbie alike.

Great way to run off the selection boxes (kicks last Curly Wurly wrapper in to the bin);)

Hopefully might see a few Boardies there on the day!

If you're taking the Howth road from Fairview, I always park in the same spot. when you come to the Sybil Hill junction (after Killester, and you will see a church on the left, school immediately opposite on the right) go straight through, then take the next right where the park ends. Turn immediately left (and I mean immediately) onto Wade's Ave and park down at the end of that road (it runs parallel to the Howth Rd). It's my little secret though, so don't tell anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭MisterDrak

The tennis courts car park on All saints Road, have expanded in the last year, should be able to handle > 100 cars now. Ill still come early to get one of them spots.
