Swapping energy suppliers - do they ever up rates during the year negating any gain?

I have a skeptic older friend who is very hesitant to move supplier as they have always stayed with the same supplier since forever, namely ESB and Bord Gas.

He quoted a recent news paper article (poss the indo, he threw the article out) that said that the gain of moving supplier is sometimes negated by a fee rise during the year.

Is this true? Are some suppliers more likely to do this than others?

Whats the average saving moving from the traditional suppliers to the very competitive ones (with a meter, not pay as you go)

Lastly, is it possible to phone your present supplier (ESB and Bord Gas) and tell them you intend to jump ship unless you get what new customers are getting? After all you have been a long standing loyal customer.

    Thanks

Your friend is talking nonsense and is paying to much for his energy.
