Folks, can anyone help me out here. I received a parking fine fee which i was unaware of so i got charged a higher amount, anyhow, I went and paid the larger fee by cheque but then i realised i had written out the cheque with the wrong amount accidentally increasing what I should have paid, i checked my account and I see that the county council lodged my cheque.....is this my fault for incorrectly writing out the cheque with the wrong amount or should the county council have not lodged the cheque as it was for the wrong amount? Either way they accepted an amount from me which is incorrect...

Suggest you write to the Council setting out the facts

They owe you the balance and if you write to them they will probably transfer it to you. They may not have noticed the incorrect amount or they might even have suspected that this was a ruse on your part to have the cheque returned uncashed, allowing you to say that you paid the fine but the Council refused to accept your payment.
As its your mistake they might be within their rights to claim a reasonable admin fee, but they probably won't.
