Is it ok to put new paper over the existing one which is in good order? It would save me a lot of trouble if it is possible. All opinions welcome

From what I can remember about paper hanging years ago it was a big no-no to put new over old. The old paper will bubble when the new paper and paste are applied and may not pull back out also if the old paper has a shiney or textured finish the new paper will not grip properly and if the old pattern is heavy it may show through. One thing I have done in this situation was when the old paper was a smooth printed pattern rather than a raised one was to use very rough sandpaper on the old paper first to rough up the surface to try and give a good key for the new paper. But the effort in sanding along with the mess and dust it would have been as handy to strip the old stuff altogether. I'm sure technology has moved on since I papered last and stripping machines have improved
