I feel really dumb for asking this question, when I first moved to the US, I was straight out of college, moved over here aged 21, so had no bills or anything to really settle before moving. Now years later I'm wanting to move back with my US wife and I'm so confused about how to do things, we rent an apartment so the logical thing to do would be to wait till lease end, we also own a car, which we'll most likely just sell to a dealership just to get it gone, if I'm not mistaken I can actually phone up all service providers such as utilities and set an end date once I have concrete plans such as plane ticket and everything set in stone.

    Yip, that's about it.

You won't get a very good return if you sell your car to a dealer. You can call the utility companies to make sure they turn if off on a certain date. If you have internet, phone, tv etc. you'll want to make sure you're not tied into a contract, if you are ask about the penalty for getting out early. I would suggest that you have everything on the level before you leave, just in case you want to move back, best not screw your credit rating.
