Motor trade policy problems

    Hi everyone.

I have had a part time motor traders policy for approx 10 years, it was a policy to cover me selling cars partime alongside my full time job

The policy always covered me for motor trade use and social and domestic use... I have never had a claim, but this year for renewal the company I'm with will only cover me for motor trade going forward, and another company the broker tried won't offer any cover...

This leaves me with a bit of a problem, as little as I need a car to use outside of motortrade, I still need it from time to time...

I asked about taking out a private policy on a car along with the motortrade policy but I was told that i would have no NCB that would carry over from trade policy... and because it was over 2yrs since I had a private policy.. it's NCB WAS GONE.. even do at the start my private NCB carried over onto the trade policy 10yrs ago... so with 8 years private Insurance and 10 years trade insure with zero claims I am the same as someone starting off with zero NCB???

Broker also said I would find it extremely difficult to get a quote because I would have to mention the trade policy aswell..

Is anyone else having issues like this?

If you read back on previous threads, you will see that people abused motor trade policies to allow them drive vehicles they couldn't specifically insure. It's a very small market OP, I don't have the answer

To be honest with you I'm tired of hearing the insurance companies using the blame someone else excuse to justify doing whatever they want to do....I used it appropriately for 10years, without issue or claim, only contact I ever had from year to year was renewal date.. I still am being given motor trade only usage but it makes things more than a bit tricky the few times that I do need to use a car for private use, usually dropping kids here and there.. So in solution to that I allowed a private policy to run alongside would be an option even if it ment costing me more but now it seems I am screwed when it comes to taking out a private policy to cover that aspect also.

Does the company that holds your motor trade policy write personal lines business?

Yes they do, and broker tried them and they won't quote me on private because of zero NCB and also the fact I have a part time trader policy with them... it's really ridiculous stuff.

Check with your broker again, don't confuse private use, with use in connection with your full time occupation.

They will certainly exclude use for any other occupation, other than trade use but should include what is called, social, domestic & pleasure, which is essentially your day to day use, exlcuding commuting to your place of work.

Unless, of course you are employed with a trader as full time occupation, then you should be ok.

My full time job is in no way connected to motor trade, my policy for the last 10yrs included social domestic and pleasure use.. but now going forward that will not be on my policy, it will only be trade useage.
