What's your thoughts on this. I mean your name and number going onto the tractor.

I just have a few people telling me I should do it to the new Landini for advertising proposes but not sure on doing it.

Anyone any thoughts..... Good or Bad idea?

Stick them up if you want but I'd say they are being smart asses. I think unless your at it full time I wouldn't bother.

If you're going for it, subtle is the key in my eyes. None of this plastered across the windscreen craic. Side of the bonnet isn't the worst. And no slogans like "we don't talk ****e we spread it" Guy I work for only has his name on the harvester and no phone number. Word of mouth will be the way you get most of your business probably and how most people get your number.

Thats what I was thinking. If I was to do it at all it would only be name and number.

    B**ger that.

Get one of those electronic signs like bus stops have for the front saying what job your on today, and which days you are currently estimating for the jobs coming up.

Leave it as is, I don't think you'll need to advertise. You don't want to work for lads that need to take numbers down off a tractor. There's a reason they need to.

When you put your name/number on the side of a tractor are you declaring that you are now a contractor. If so then I presume that you need additional insurance cover like contractors liability.
If you had a tip on the road with a car/lorry would your standard insurance cover you when the assessor comes to inspect your tractor and sees your name/phone no on it.
Our contractor only has his name on the tractors. He told me what his insurance bill is and you'd wonder why he bothers contracting.

I wouldn't say that's necessarily the case. Lots of guys might be planning on doing new types of work in the future that they haven't done in the past. My regular contractor doesn't do reseeding for example.
Free advertising at the end of the day.

I have contractors insurance but if you are balng and/or hedgecutting your premium skyrockets.

Your point point on an accident is vaild and one I was thinking of alright.

Just put the number '9' on the side of the bonnet. Lads will be thinking fook me that must be some outfit if he has at least 9 of them yokes. Next day put a 7 on it etc.;)

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

You'd wonder where the insurance is on the hedgecutting when lads are only charging 25 - 30/hr,

Are these farmers chancing their arm doing extra cash work or people who think they are runniing a contracting business?

You will be better off getting a branded invoice book made up and a few business cards and send 2/3 out with each invoice.
You will get more work by getting a name for being reliable timewise and doing good work. Not going looking for the guys who think your another version of an overdraft and leave machine wrecking gifts for you to find in things etc.etc.

No idea. only have 4 years left in army so don't know what or where I'm gonna end up. Trying to improve the business to see if it's viable in 4 years for full of part time

Wasn't there a piece of metal from a ditch put through a car around bunbrosna a few years ago injuring an occupant

Very easily done. Even if the driver gets hurt. Questions on why he was there in the first place

There should be no need. A good reputation and word of mouth should be enough. Only one you'd be grabbing the attention of is the taxman!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,121 ✭✭✭Who2

I done a small bit of advertising, I was getting about 1 in 6 jobs. A lot of time wasters and lads looking for the cheapest quote. I get 3 out of 4 jobs on the word of mouth ones.

Like that bumper sticker "my other car is a Porsche"

Looked naff on the back of an old banger, but on a Bentley...

Most of time this sign writing is only hot air between the ears and people wanting to state "I have made it " .
Really the proof is in the eating .good work spreads good word .
Leave it off and focus on a job well done .

In the unfortunate event of an accident you don't want to be identified when some gobdaw puts a pic up on the web of the accident. Contractor down here after bowling 2 silage trailers this year. Ive been shown pics on FB with name/ ph no. clearly visible on capsized trailer. Often wonder would they get calls from some smartass after the incident.

I wouldn't be a fan of it myself. Usually a person wouldn't be taking down your number unless it's bad news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭simx

See the contractor that is most local to me and does a lot of work hasn't his name on any machine he has, word of mouth is the best advertisement, he's reasonable and does good work, can p@&s me off the off time not coming in time but he has more important customers than me I suppose, usually ok though

From a different perspective I think it's good to have a name or farm name on your tractors and machinery as it lets people know who you are and what your about. Like most vegetable lads have names on side of rigs, the same names and logos as on their delivery truck and packaging so it brings it full circle back to the consumer. Same as names on ton boxes people start to realise who you are. And numbering tractors is great in large fleets from a staff management and maintainence point of view.
