I owned a diesel 2.2 and I really wouldn't touch one. Petrol fire away but the diesel will cause issues...it's just a case if when. If you're hell bent on one buy one with an impeccable service history.

I've had 3 Mazda 6's now. Two petrol ones and currently a 2010 2.2 diesel version.

The petrols are bulletproof but thirsty enough. Perfect if you don't do a lot of mileage which is why I owned them at the time.

The 2ltr diesel is seemingly a complete disaster but I've no experience of it.

The 2.2ltr diesel that have currently is a lovely car to drive in particular on a long spin.

It doesn't like town driving. DPF likes to get clogged and will need to be regenerated. Not a big deal but if you're not doing mileage it will cause you issues.

I do about 15k per year and it's only needed regen once early on in my ownership so may have been a bit from the last driver.

I've done over 40k with no issues otherwise. Currently 142k on the clock.

To do a regen yourself you need to do 2,000 revs for 20 mins according to the booklet which obviously requires a long spin. I try to do this every month at least to break up my short trips.

All in all for the interest of balance is absolutely buy another one. Would probably have upgraded to the new model by now if I have the funds.

There was a recall on the timing chain of around the year your looking. Mine being a 2010, Mazda actually provided the parts and most of the labour for free at my last service. Just something to be aware of.

I'm still getting 40mpg from my 2007 1.8 petrol mazda 6 252000 km on the clock.

OP - I have a 2015 Mazda 6 2.2 diesel. I picked it up new and have 100k KM on the clock.

I can't complement the car enough. I change every two years and I've yet to get as good an all round car as the Mazda 6. Economy / Comfort / Power, the 6 has it all.

I'm due a to change in January and It's the first time i'm going to go back into the same make/model.

Apologies - i missed the year in the original post.

But for what it's worth, the diesel 2.2 Skyactive engine is a peach.

Fair play, must be a lot of long trips. I was mainly short trips when I had mine hence owning a petrol in the first place.

Mostly 8 mile round trip to local town doing around 38-42. I usually get around 44 on the motorway.

The two Mazda 6 petrols I had I'd say were mid late thirties with a mix of driving.

I'm probably a little heavy footed but still. I wouldn't have thought hitting 40mpg without a lot of motorway driving was possible.

I'm not doubting you though, that's your experience. Mines a bit different.

It never put me off the car though. The reliability is just so good you don't mind spending a few quid more on petrol.

I wouldn't be as heavy on the foot but don't drive like a granny either. Did you have the valve seal problems with your 6's? The engine oil comes up through the valves and needs topping up every 2 weeks.

Nope. Regularly service, checked at home and generally looked after (other than a heavy foot, lol)

I'm getting from this that petrol good and 2.2l diesel is ok but keep away from 2l diesel.!! Is the 2l engine same as Ford Peugeot citroen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

I wouldn't class the 2.2 as ok, more a risk. Between the diesel rising and timing chain (had mine done under 60k km along with a steering rack) there's better options out there.

The Mazda 6 never used diesel engines from other manufacturers. Both the 2.0 litre and 2.2 litre diesel are Mazda's own in house designs. Your a brave man buying either imo.

I've very very recently bought a Mazda 6 1.8 petrol. It went through a full service at a reputable local garage and within a week has burnt up the oil.....all of it. So it's gone today for reconditioning. I bought privately and got stung big time. I'm assuming after all this time you have bought already. What did you go for?
