NCT question!

I think I asked this before I just need to clarify it for a relative.
They've a 2007 car the NCT is due to expire in May 2017.
If they leave their NCT go to May they'll be handed a very saying May 2018.
However if they do their NCT in January or early February will they be handed a cert saying January 2019
Is this correct?

Yes, that's correct.

If they do test more than 90 days before due date, they will get cert valid for 2 years from time of test.

Yes correct, they should look at booking it shortly for the date in January or February, they are the busiest months.

When your booking the nct ring them.
Do not book online.
They are obliged to get you a test at your chosen centre within 4 weeks of the call,
If they can't Get you a date within 4 weeks then you get the test for free.

I know it's not your question, it's Just something that not a lot people realise and they will probably get you a test within that time.

When you get NCT 90 days early remember that your NCT renewal date also changes from then on.

Just as an aside about the test booking line.

Yesterday was the last possible day to re-test my car, without incurring a full test fee. only got the last few things finished up at 5pm, and the on-line service showed no test slot untill next Wednesday.

Rang up and got a very helpful girl. She rang the Cavan test center, but they were on a break. She told me to ring back at 5.55 exactly, as the lines close at six.

Did so, and she kept me on the line while she rang Cavan, and got me a 9pm slot.
Passed and home by 10.

Basically you get 2 years from the test date so your renewal date is effectively 3 months earlier than the birthday of your car.

Usually you'd test within 90 days of the cars birthday and get 2 years plus 90 days (or less depending) but in this case you're kinda using a loophole of sorts to get 2 years for the last time.

This only applies when your car is about to hit 10 years old.

No, once the car is 10 years old it's NCT every year. What you can do is have it tested early within 90 days of the due date and you then get the year from the due date. If you test it before 90 days of the due date you will have a year from that date.

Car is over ten years old and gets an annual test.

If you test the car within 90 days of it's due date you will get a year plus up to 90 days extra (as in your test will expire a year after the due date and not the date you test it. Your test could get you up to 15 months driving.)

If you test the car 91+ days before it's due date, your test just lasts for a year from the test date.
