Have 20k to spend. Would like to get either a Disco or Range Rover. Just wondering if I'm mad to be considering a disco or Range Rover.

What are the running costs and maintenance like?

Anything other 4x4s I should be considering? Don't like those cross over SUV types. Don't want a land cruiser pajero.

Live on the side of a mountain so need to be able to get in and out in bad weather. Roads are not great in general so needs to be comfortable on them. Roads flood in winter so need to be able to pass through these.

You want something that isn't going to let you down and leave you stranded. A Land Rover or Range Rover isn't what you want in that case. Get a landcruiser.

Edit: Sorry just saw in the op you don't want a land cruiser. Nissan Pathfinder?

    What about a Mitsubishi Outlander?

I think in your situation id lookat a discovery before a range rover. I wouldnt rule out the smaller 4x4s either if you dont need to tow.

For floods you need a proper snorkel kit fitted and completely seal the engine, there's plenty of people with SUVs who killed their engine thinking that they can drive through floods.

How about the Volvo XCs, Subaru All Road or Outback or there are plenty of quattro Audi's. A four wheel drive car with proper tyres and chains for bad freezing will be better than a large SUV, especially on the pocket as they are not cheap to repair. As for flooding unless you know the depth don't go in.

200-250 a corner for Pirelli or Bridgestone winter tyres. /Summers would be a bit cheaper.

Buying either of these is only the beginning, you need a deep wallet to maintain then too. Neither are low maintenance vehicles and I'd say the Discovery would probably be a bit more suited to off road than the RR. If you want something with lower maintenance costs I'd probably go with a Landcruiser or Pajaro.

Lexus rx 450h? Nice vehicle, and if I'm not mistaken shares the same chassis as the land cruiser, at least it used to be.
Volvo xc90 or xc70, have a nice 2.4 diesel engine.
