I've decided to move onto my great grandmothers branch of the family, I found them here in 1911 in Meath:

I can't for the life of me find them in 1901, the husband as you can see is Patrick Lynan/Lynam, and the wife Mary (maiden name Kavanagh)

I have found a Mary Kavanagh in 1901 in Killucan, which is just across the border from the townland she is in her married home in, so I suppose it could be the case they simply weren't married at this time:

They were said to have been married ten years in 1911, but perhaps that was slightly rounded up, it is even possible they married in the three days between 30 March 1901 and 2 April 1901, but rounding up is more likely.

Patrick & Mary were married on 13 Feb 1901, see here

Looks like Mary filled out the form and then Patrick signed his first name only. It's not the enumerator who filled it out; he doesn't make those fancy loops on the capitals.

Think this might be them :) Living with her parents, based on the address from the marriage cert.

Looks like it; her father makes his capital M with the same loop.

Thanks a mill for the help everyone, those links you posted are spot on, that's 3 ways I've seen the surname spelt now, Lynam, Lynan and Lynane. I know my great grandma always went by Lynam but I suppose it's not uncommon for names to be misspelt over the years

It's more to do with illiteracy and spelling being more fluid in the past than it is now. In genealogy, you have to search every possible variant once you go back in time.

Yes; one branch of my family was McDonagh, also MacDonagh, McDonogh, M'Donough, etc, etc.
