Looking to import from the North so looking at VRT rates. Does anyone know would there be any benefit if I imported the car in January 2017 as opposed to this year. Car is January 131 registered.

    Thanks,
    Dinging.

It won't be a huge difference. It may drop very slightly but if it was me personally I would not be bothered waiting. I'd just do it now.

It could easily go up a bit too as Revenue know people tend to wait until January in hope it goes down.

Looking to import a VW CC. Just having a look at the VRT rates. Car is a January 2013 registered car. Coming in at €4681 VRT. I was playing around with the VRT calculator. If the car was registered in January 2012 the VRT is coming in at a full €700 cheaper. I know I can't change the date of the registration but would it be worth asking querying with revenue. Anyone know why would there be such a difference in the VRT between the dates?

Maybe I am missing the obvious problem here, but the Jan 2012 figure is cheaper because the car is a year older which will have a lower OMSP.

I'd say your onto something there...
Also if the 2012 had higher mileage then average according to the revenue calculator might have seen cheaper quote. You could get a cheaper VRT quote on the 2013 if the mileage was well over the average for its age.

If car is 4 years old then accessories won't be assessed by Revenue.

I've been looking at revenue vrt pages over the last few days looking at bring in a 2011/2012 ford galaxy 1.6 titanium x spec. Got a bit of a shock today when I was rechecking and found the VRT chargeable has gone from under 2.5K to nearly 5K. Had nearly committed to buy based on the old number so lucky I checked! Is there any comeback if revenue make drastic changes between you getting the vehicle and getting it registered?

Nope. No real comeback. You can dispute after paying if you think the car was overvalued. Have you kept a note on the OMSP they reckoned the car was worth. Can't have just doubled in value overnight.

Sorry should have said the car I'm looking to import was registered in January 2013 and based on the current OMSP the VRT is coming in at €4,681, OMSP is €24,637. However if I select the car was registered in December 2012 (not January, sorry got this wrong in my original post) the VRT is €3,982, OMSP is €20,962. A saving of almost €700.

So I suppose my question is if I can ask the dealer to hold off and we do the transaction on January 1st, 2017 will I save €700 in VRT?

There is no guarantee that the VRT will decrease, it's possible that it may increase too. Revenue know that people wait until January to see if the VRT figure decreases.

Yes nothing guaranteed once revenue get involved but their calculator is giving me an indication that there will be a reduction in VRT based on the car being over 48 months old. I would just hate to have to handover €700 if I don't need to. No hurry for the car and have imported a car from NL last year so I think revenue have go enough out of me.

You can always appeal afterwards if you can show them proof that their OMSP is too high.

I'd say the best time to buy would be around March/April with the change in UK registration meaning prices of a Jan or Feb 13 reg value dropping in value. Brexit will probably start gathering pace too so I'd expect a further drop in Sterling.

Also bear in mind that Revenue may not drop the OMSP for a 2013 car bang on January the 1st. The might wait until Feb or March to do so.

I did write it down. Did not note the original cost or the rate of depreciation though and no screen shots unfortunately. I'll keep an eye on it over the next while as it has made me do a rethink anyway. Is there anywhere that a list of statistical codes and OMSP values can be downloaded rather than having to query online every time? Could be used to track values over time too!
