    Hi there Guys,
long time lurker, first time poster!

After years of 0.75meg download speed because of being the last house on the eircom line i decided it was time to have a look around for broadband providers.
Being in what you could class as a valley in rural Cavan its not that easy.
there are a couple of wireless operators but i didn't have line of sight. Satellite didn't appeal as the download caps are a joke and kids trying to play online etc.

after alot of searching i went with Rural Wifi - €65 per month for unlimited 4g package (runs on 3 network)
Modem just arrived yesterday and i headed straight for the attic. spent the next couple of hours trying to get the best spot for it. there is a three mast pretty close to me which is not 4g enabled however another three mast approx 8-10 miles away is 4g enabled.
I know people say the three mobile broadband is a joke but i really feel that if your using a proper broadband sim then you get decent speed compared to AYCE sim.

Anyway i must have done 50 speed tests last night between 8pm- 10.30pm (peak times)
and it stayed constant at between 5-6 meg down and 1.5 up which is a vast improvement on what i had.

So i decide to try and stream a movie!
Little bit into movie the progress bar just starts zooming up so i do another speedtest
55 down 10 up, O.M.G, another test 28 down 5 up and another 42 down 10 up etc etc

Now im thinking is it possible that im picking up the signal from both masts? i.e sometimes the one thats not 4g enabled and sometimes the one that is 4g enabled?

Is there any way that i can get an antenna or something as even the ones i seen are 360 degrees so im still going to pick up signal of both masts ( obv i want the one thats 4g)

Can anyone tell me what i need to do please?

For now, try forcing your router into 4G only mode as follows. These are based on the D-Link DWR-921, which Rural WiFi supplies:
    1. In your web browser, key in http://192.168.0.1/ to bring up the router's webpage.
    2. Enter 'admin' and leave the password field empty.
    3. Go into 'Internet' at the top.
    4. Change the 'Prefer Service Type' drop-down to '4G Only Mode'.
    5. Then click 'Apply' at the bottom.

With the router forced in 4G mode, try positioning it in a few places. The angle of the router can make a difference (due to its internal horizontal antenna), so it's worth trying a few speed tests turned to the the left/right by 30-60 degrees.

The best time to try the speed/positioning tests is early in the day as Three's speed can get quite erratic in the evening with the network load.

    Thanks for that Sean.
Is that address a default for all routers?
the router ive been supplied with is a Teltonica RUT 950.
Believe me ive tried numerous angles/places for the router as where i have it now a slight movement either way and the signal drops.

Also there are 4 antennas on this router. 2 for wifi & 2 for gsm
would the positioning of these make any difference or are they just for picking up the wifi/phone signal in the house?

    Thanks for your help.

I didn't realise they started issuing a new type of router, unless they had issues with the D-Link. So those settings will not work the Teltonica router.

For the GSM antennas, one antenna should be aimed up (antenna #1 if it mentions the antenna port number) and the second antenna horizontally. The network providers here use vertical and horizontal polarity for MIMO on the 4G network. For the rotation, it would be the horizontal antenna that needs to be turned.

Generally I find Wi-Fi antennas worked best positioned in a V shape. These just affect the Wi-Fi distribution within the hose and shouldn't affect the network signal.

Going by the info I could find online, you can force that one into 4G mode as follows:
    1. In your web browser, key in http://192.168.1.1/ to bring up the router's webpage.
    2. Enter 'admin' for the username and admin01 for the password.
    3. Go into the 'Network' drop-down at the top and into 'Mobile'
    4. Change the 'Service mode' drop-down to '4G (LTE) only'
    5. Then click 'Save' at the bottom.

I just assumed you positioned the router based on the best 3G reception. If the 4G is coming from a different direction, then there's the possibility the router may work better in another spot.
