So Ivan is getting a Sunday morning show. Great news, hopefully it'll end up with him back midweek, Newstalk has been a bit flat without him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭Pedalare Pedalare!

Great to have him back. Reckon he'll be a more adequate adversary for Marian than Healy anyway. That's the only way Newstalk will shift listeners - bringing personality and some hard opinions to it.

What happens to that hour of Off The Ball though?

Are there any rules regarding what constitutes news? NT seem to use the "news" to promote things on their shows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 596 ✭✭✭Conservative

Healy can't catch a break can he? :D

Would love to see him gone entirely.

Cheers Ivan, delighted to have the loud fella back!

Do you think it possible they'd make Drive a threesome? Ivan would be well able to handle Chris and Sarah ganging up on him and would be a welcome foil for the two.
Alternatively I'd give Paul Williams the shove in the mornings and get Ivan back there.

Now they just need to put him back on mornings and ill actually start listening to it again. New crew still havent found a comfortable rhythm after 6 months together, colemans arrogance is beyond insufferable, williams is possibly the most awkward human being ever put in front of a radio mic and collete literally goes out of her way to be offended by everything

best news to come out of newstalk in an age.

jesus but the station seriously needs more moves like this.

    1. I dont know why I'm listening to this again

    2. How/why do Newstalk allow Chris to continuosly disparage Newstalk? He talks about it like its the most laughable mickey mouse operation going.

Anyone know what the latest JNLR figures are Drive? Has it plummeted from the Right Hook days?

My God, it's just wall to wall Trump bashing on Newstalk these days. Even Gilroy on Off The Ball consistently makes cheap jokes at Trump's expense. Sick to death of the lot of them at this stage. I wish they would just accept that Hilary didn't win and start covering other topics.

i heard dennis o brien had a big row with trump a few years back over a deal that went wrong,

    Ha ha ha.

I was wondering why this Mannix Flynn fella was so worked up about the plague, nay, scourge of rickshaw drivers in Dublin.

    Blah blah...safety...(nope that's not it)
Blah blah...regulation (nope, that's not it)
Blah blah...physical damage to taxis (ah! Now we're getting somewhere)

Bloody pollution free low cost rickshaws, slightly impinging on my taxi driving constituent's turf.

And they're all from Brazil! (Not to be racist!)

And they sell drugs! Because as we all know, drug dealers famously try to make their own work more physically demanding and more visible on the street.

Laughable stuff by MacKean today. I mean seriously. Does he produce any original journalism or is it just the chatting to people on the street plus an inevitable county or city councillor? It's so out of place.

I've never heard Bollox Flynn FOR anything, always against.

I'm glad to see him back. I don't always agree with him but he's never dull. He's not a natural broadcaster though so I hope they find him someone to bounce off of.

Ridiculous interview with Mary Mitchell O Connor yesterday re: HP job losses. 75% of HP's profits come from its printing arm. 31 billion. Granted they are not all from inkjet but you'd swear they were closing their printing division! It's the only thing that's kept them afloat with all the issues with PC business etc.

Not sure if she was bs'ing or just clueless. Sounded like the latter.

Can imagine some HP ball breakers flown in from the states to do the cull see her coming and just feed her any old bull**** excuse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,612 ✭✭✭✭meeeeh

Actually since we have experts in this thread, any source for those 31 billion profits?

Because all I can find is relatively disappointing results and a turnover, not profits, that is nowhere near the amount claimed above. But hey anything to criticize others and their incompetence.

They are moving for cheaper manufacturing costs and nothing else!

Links to back up that 75%?

Why, people on boards complain a lot. But many people in Ireland still listen.

Boards folk listen to radio shows just to complain, and then wonder where the high figures come from.

Is Jonathan Healy completely gone from Newstalk now? with this move?

Well the old Newstalk show started at 10am, so maybe they will give him between 10am and 11am to read out the newspaper headlines in a sarcastic tone, and made all his smart ar$e asides.

Agree, he does have that "stirring the pot" attitude about him, that is lacking in Newstalk at the moment. The only thing that use to drive me mental though about him,was on monday mornings on the Breakfast show, when he would admirably gloat to Chris about all the free sporting events that he attended over the weekend, while us, poor Joe soaps would love to be at those events but wouldnt have the means too.............

Apologies typed on phone. Should have read 3.1 billion!

Source: our state broadcaster on Tueaday evening claimed that approx 75% of HP Inc. Profit came from its printing business.

My post probably made it sound like it included HPE.

My larger point was her interview basically suggested that "people are no longer using inkjet printers" and this was the reason for the closure.

There is certainly falling demand for printing / OEM supplies in general but it's far being on life support

They have also recently acquired Samsung's printing business (predominantly not Inkjet) but demand is falling across the board for both laser and inkjet.

They will be manufacturing in lower cost plants. Simple as that.

They are a plague. Their nationality is irrelevant, but , while we are at it.

Unless they are EU Citizens,(including Irish) , or hold Stamp 4 Residency, their economic activities are restricted

They are not allowed to be SELF EMPLOYED without a business permit and they won't get one of those.

If they are legal students, then they can work for a limited period, but who is their employer? They certainly won't get a work permit for that job either. If they are not working for an employer, (while on a Student Visa) or no not have a Stamp 4 /or EU Citizenship, then they can not work for themselves. Their actions are then illegal.

Moreover, how many of them even have legal status?

Considering every other business pays through the nose for insurance and are held responsible for any potential injuries etc, you won't be laughing if you feel off one of these due to the negligence of these drivers and then he goes awol and can not be found , nor has the funds to pay compo

How is Newstalk lacking a pot stirrer? They have George Hook and Paul Williams.
I like Ivan but he's wasted on a Sunday slot. He's excellent at having his finger on the pulse for current affairs. Sunday morning slots tend to be the prevail of fluff and light entertainment.

I wouldn't tune into Newstalk at the weekend anyway. It's part of my work-day routine but I have a life to get on with at the weekend so I can't imagine I'll ever hear the show. It seems like a waste of his talent but i'm sure he sees it as a retirement gig essentially.

    Waste of talent?

I don't know what his new show is called, but I would suggest "Getting Your Foot Back In The Door Before The Next Reshuffle - with Ivan Yates" would be appropriate.

Hook is a potstirrer in fairness, but he's bloody infuriating to listen to. Williams is awful on radio, I can't listen to him.

Ivan is very, very good at playing the cantankerous fool, he's badly missed.
