Couldn't have given a hoot about this when I first heard about it. But then I saw the trailer -

and laughed my hole off at the prospect of Jude Law playing the Pontiff, all the while speaking in a comedy Noo Yawk accent and calling himself "Lenny."

Could be some God given schlock.

I don't understand why they felt the need to make him American..Jude Law's accent is dodgy at best. Looks alright, I enjoyed The Borgais so might give it a watch, not expecting a lot though.

It starts on Sky Atlantic on the 27th of October 2016 at 9pm

from watching the first 2 episodes I have to say

I HAVE NO IDEA WHATS GOING ON AND IS IT A COMEDY ???

I really enjoyed it. It's a bit mad at times, and constantly pulls the rug from under you in what you think is going to happen next. Not 100% convinced it'll hook me for a series, but I'll be giving the next episode a chance.

Its all a bit surreal and Jude Law jars with any sane image of a Pope. He is laying down a subversive agenda which probably evolves from his childhood. The dialogue cracks along at a frantic pace and the cinematography is superb.
Not for your Granny with a Rosary - more a study of that Machiavellian Cosa Nostra that is the Vatican. Promising start.

I have them on my Skybox. The wily Cardinal has as asked his younger sidekick to investigate Pope Lenny's background and apparently there is nothing incriminating to be found - his sexual orientation is 'none' ! Its all a bit theatrical and weird so I'm going to see how it evolves. AA Gill in the Times gives it a great review and that's sayin' something.

People downloading the show off torrent sites are having trouble finding subs for the Italian parts.

I had it recorded so just after watching it now.
I thought it was really good.
His parents abandoned him a child, and he seems to have replaced his parents with God, as it is his belief that has been a constant in his life.
He doesn't want the adoration of the people, but he wants people to adore God.
He wants respect so Diane Keating the nun is made call him 'your holiness' instead of Lenny.
    I enjoyed it.

I had to look up the episode scripts in order to fill in the blanks for the Italian dialogue (the scripts are all in English). It's really frustrating, not having subtitles.

A kangaroo. It was a gift from the Australian prime minister. Why he deemed a wild animal who will be jumping around and $h1teing all over the Vatican an appropriate gift for the new Pope is anyone's guess.

Lol..........:D Yep, the script is surreal but that stretched things a bit too far.
They have avoided all the Borgia like themes ( murder/incest) so far but I'll guess they are coming.

For sure. It's a slow burner, but you can tell that what we're currently watching is the calm before the proverbial sh1t storm that is about to be unleashed within the Vatican walls.

have a feeling it will turn out in the last episode

Lenny is imagining it all and is just about to walk onto his podiun for his first speech as pope ???

I hope Graham Linehan got some royalties for completely lifting a scene out of Father Ted.

I mean come on, the scene with the cardinal choosing his next location on the globe is totally out of the Bishop Brennan playbook!

Finished season 1 and thought it was an OK show but very confusing and had a lot of dark subjects like child abuse, sex, corruption in the Church etc

Pope Lenny was testing all his cardinals and knew what some of them were up too.

Season 2 is in development AFAIK

Series 1 episode 5 is on Sky tonight. Its slowed down after a promising first episode.I really don't buy the Pope strolling around the Vatican in the middle of the night scene - they need to get a grip with the storyline ?

I think it's the best show around... It's all about timing.

Great show and I wasn't a fan of Jude Law but he's swayed me in this. Very hard to understand some pieces without subtitles but a pretty decent show. It looked like they wrapped the whole thing up at the end but I see there's a second season in development now. I really liked the show.

Don't spoil it for us terrestrial TV viewers but I'm presuming there will be an episode 6 ? I knew sex would rear its ugly head at some stage.

    There's 10 episodes in season 1

    What's the story with
the secretary of states secret son and the old guy in the garden shed ??

    Also
    the group of disfigured guys

    It's a very odd series

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭spatchco

havent figured it out, but am still enjoying some thing different in the series

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭recipio

It has it all. Sex, gay sex, evil. machiavellian politics, blackmail and intrigue all made with a kind of Stanley Kubrick attention to detail. Should be required showing in every Seminary.:D

It's hands down the strangest show I've ever watched - yet I've thoroughly enjoyed almost every moment of it.

Jude Law is immense in it. But Voiello steals every scene!

Wonder if there's going to be a 3rd edition?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,474 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Enjoyed it but can someone explain the whole thing?
