    Hi all,

I have decided due to poor prices that I am keeping some heifers for the winter

They are 400 to 450 kg and I am hoping to B and B them with a friend,

what is the procedure and what is the going rate, with and without supplying fodder

Might be better to cut your losses here.

What's your plan for them after the B&B ??
Someone I was talking to today said they were holding similar stock as there would likely be a go on them for grass in the spring, he's basing this on the fact that a lot of finishers will be idle over the winter and then mad to jump back into stock come the spring.
I'm not convinced myself and thinking of letting ours go.

I am thinking of bulling them in January and selling them as incalv heifers next summer/back end.....

.....thinking being the most important word there !!!

Mite be worth more as finishing heifers.
Alot of farmers are not keen on buying first calfers as they might be difficult to calf

I m not telling you what to do, but consider the investment against any possible gain.
I looked at holding here and thought against it, I m disappointed with prices but at least its over now, I can't see prices increasing in the short term, and would have to buy fodder to hold so I thought fcuk it.
I m not solely depending on it though, so maybe your situation is different.

Is quality assurance worth that much per kg

Its worth 12 cent per KG, But I think a lot of Factories wont take your cattle without it especially when there plentiful. I got caught bad a few years ago, I hadn't the Quality assurance. An agent came to look at the cattle and he had a factory man with him, when he found out I hadn't the Bord bia he lost all interest. They ended up going to Moy Vally meats at a reduced Base price and no Quality Bonus. Swore Id never be without it again, I didn't have it at the time because I was listening to a fellow who told me not to bother with the quality Assurance as he had it and got no bonus on most his cattle, obviously his cattle didn't grade well enough to get Bonus. Its not a big deal to get either.
