VRT - car in Ireland 5 months

    Hi,
I brought in a car from the UK approximately 5 months ago. To make a long story short, the engine failed as I was driving it down (to VRT it in my county) a week after it arrived into the country.

It turned into a nightmare and I needed the engine to be replaced. I was waiting a few months to get my hands on a re-conditioned engine. I was able to drive it home last weekend.

With regards to VRT, will I receive a penalty when registering for VRT or will they understand the situation if I show them proof of the original import, receipt of recovery pickup and text messages/emails to mechanic etc...?

    Thanks.

If you present your story as is you will be liable for penalties.

    Thanks for the reply.

So, unfortunately like most government departments, there is no reasoning with them :-(

Is it the same penalty no matter what the time delay once it is over the 30 days?

Produce a handwritten receipt saying you bought it the day before. It's not really right but it's a loophole that will work.

The V561 / Certificate of permanent export has a notified date of export of early August and date of acquisition of early August.

Would producing the receipt for the engine indicate that the car was a non runner? So it wouldn't be liable for vrt until it had the new engine fitted?

You say that the engine failed as you were driving to the NCT centre. If nothing else, this will mean that the car is already on their system. If only the engine had failed before you put it on the ferry; then it would not have been capable of propulsion meaning not a MPV and thus no VRT event until you changed the engine. Little prospect if you had already recorded the reg with NCTS.

Car was being fixed in Donegal for 1 week. Then I was driving it home and it broke down. I was planning to VRT that week when I had it home, I hadn't submitted anything to them at that stage.
