Do I have to have a car in order to do my driving test?

    Hi,
I am in my late 20s and am finally getting to the point where I feel like I need to be able to drive and have a license. I'm in full time education and can't afford a car at the moment, so I am wondering is there a way to do the driving test without owning a car? Surely there must be a way to do it without owning one? Can't find any info on the net about it, so any info from readers would be greatly appreciated. I feel like this is something that needs to be done in my life, but my financial situation always holds me back from doing it!! Can the test centre provide you with an instructor car or something?

    Thanks in advance!

Yes you can do the driving test without owning a car,but in order to get that far you must first do a theory test, then if you pass that apply for a Learner Permit. You must then have twelve compulsory driving lessons with a qualified Instructor during which time you can apply for your test and when you get your test date you can arrange with your Instructor to use his or her car.Driving lessons are usually about €30 per hour and maybe €100 extra to use the car for the test.
Get in touch with a Driving School near you for full details, also check out RSA.ie.Good luck.

Thank you! I have a learners permit that's been expired about 3 years and had 12 lessons...this was a few years ago now and I'd like to pick up where I left off and follow through this time!! So knowing I could use an instructors car is brilliant. I will probably have a few more lessons while waiting for the exam as I'd be a little rusty...thanks again for all the info :)

Makes sense Skatedude, I just thought you had to have a car as it only mentions about your own car on the RSA website...great to know anyway thanks :)
