2017 Santa Fe or KIA Sorento?

Looking at changing the current motor (2010 Mazda 6 Estate) for either a 7-seater Santa Fe or Sorento.

Don't need the 4WD but do want the better spec (leather interior etc) which pushes you towards the far pricier 4WD Santa Fe at c.46k list, whereas the 2WD Sorento at c.41k is fully and probably even better spec'd.

Having driven both, I'm leaning slightly towards the Sorento but would be a little worried about resale values down the road.

Any thoughts or recommendations? Or indeed alternatives that I should be considering?

Skoda are launching the Kodiaq next March and pricing is supposed to be similar to the Sorento/Santa Fe. Not sure how the price would pan out when you start ticking extras on it though but certainly worth looking at. Santa Fe and Sorento have been out a few years now so much be due a facelift/revision soon.

What about the Nissan X-Trail? Revised model is due early next year including the addition of a more powerful 2.0 litre diesel engine. Renault have the 7 seater Koleos due next year too which is based on the X-Trail.

Sorrento was only revised late last year. Santa Fe just had its facelift. I still have a feeling that an equivalent powered Kodiaq will be saucy money.

Thanks for the feedback. Have considered waiting for the Skoda Kodiiaq but given the fact that there's no specs or pricing available as yet, it'll be March/April at best before there available and no idea what they'll be like, have decided to pass. The depreciation on anything Renault puts me of the Kaleos to be honest... Have tried the X-Trail alright, but wasn't blown away and the styling is very "old"...
Which leaves me with my original conundrum :)

Thanks again. Santa Fe are probably due a more major overhaul in late 2018 at a guess whereas Sorento refreshed in early 2016. The lack of any guidance on pricing on Kodiaq is frustrating - entry level pricing in UK looks OK, but God knows what you'll end up paying if you want equivalent power and spec to the other two.

Any experiences of either that people would care to share? Thanks in advance!

If you don't want 4 WD surely it is the kia you have to go for with 5 k in your pocket, Peugeot have a 5008 coming out also which is worth looking at,don't know release date etc

You could always go for the Ford Edge - probably the better looking car, but damn its pricey

Ford Edge is only a 5 seater and @ over 50k for the base model I cannot see too many people buying these with their own money.

I have a 141 sante fe, bought a demo model and can't be happier with it. However the new Tucson is very similar looking now and they seem to be everywhere. Whereas when we got it first it stood out a bit.It also has no front parking sensors which I think is annoying. Great car though, no issues. Would recommend

Saw one at a ford dealer yesterday. I thought was going to be a lot larger vehicle, looked quite small next to a disco. It's very American looking, I kind of like it though.

I recently drove a Sorento on test. I really liked it. It felt bigger than the Santa Fe also. I suppose it should as it is bigger! Pictures of the interior don't do it justice. The only thing putting me off was I really wanted an auto, and with their poor CO2's it was excessive over the Manual. Also, just to point out that the Dealer said there is a minimum of 3.5K off list price for the top of the range manual.
Also drove a Santa Fe and X-Trail. The X-Trail is much smaller. Car dimensions really can lie. I found the Santa Fe a little dated inside but as mentioned above, I reckon there could be a completely new model in 2018. If willing to wait the Kodiaq and 5008 would certainly be worth a look, albeit, I think both will be smaller than the Sorento.
If I 'had to' buy tomorrow I'd probably plump for a Sorento.

PS. Ford Edge pricing is bonkers.

While I really like them, they're ancient at this stage and due for replacement next year. Also only 5 seats.

Not seen a Ford Edge and doubt I will at that crazy price. See Hyundai Tuscons and Sante Fe and Kias everywhere.

Thanks for the feedback. After test driving both the Santa Fe and Sorento a few times (and a lot of soul searching!), we've plumped for a 2WD Sorento. Really decision was made for all the reasons above.

Thanks again everyone for your comments!

As they're built in the USA is there a higher duty on them pushing the price up or something? Because I bet they're about half that price over there...!

Think the initial high price plus high VRT is probably making it excessive to the Irish. Entry level is probably too high spec'd for the Irish. Ford seems to be pitting it against the Toureg, which is similarly priced Im guessing? The Edge is big though, marginally bigger than a Sorento, albeit 5 seat only, so I'd say as a 5 seater its very spacious! Still cant see it selling though.

The Toureg is more credible due to the badge, image, size and reputation. Paying 50k for a Ford is just bonkers imo.

I'd disagree with that. The Toureg is ridiculously priced. VW is no more premium than ford or Toyota. Reputation isn't good either.

I don't get the VW thing either but are far far more "premium" than Toyota (whose perception has nosedived in recent years) or Ford. I'd more equate VW to say Volvo. Not quite there like BMW etc. That's why VW will get away with charging more, Ford won't.
But I'd take a new Toureg anyway over some US Ford. It's far more desirable whatever you think about it. And the market will say the same. Unless Ford slash the price of this thing it'll stay stuck to the showroom floors.

Can't agree with the premium thing at all. I was in a Volvo and VW dealers (amongst others) yesterday. The volvos despite being donkeys years old design felt really nice and premium. The same standard fair spec on show in VW felt like misery boxes to me. Just like a Toyota or seat showroom.

Look I'm no VW fan but there's no way they're down on Toyotas level who I'd equate with Kia, Nissan and the like. VW are sub premium which is why many buyers find them so appealing. You can have a cheaper basic model or higher spec which generally transforms them. A baseline (Or is ot Trendline now?) feels as you describe, a high spec one will feel plush and sub premium. They do a great interior, usually. No way your typical Auris or Avensis has the same feel or materials as a Passat or Golf
