Used engine oil

Just out of interest, I always get rid of my used oil, drop it down to the local DCC place. But wondering what everyone else? I have never seen a campaign from goverment to advise people what it does if you throw this stuff down the drain, serious environmental impacts.

Could one of the mods add a poll?

There's a "civic amenity centre" pretty handy to me. €5 in except for Weee only drops, weee is free.

Tbh I end up gathering about 20l at a time and combining the trip with some other dumping.

I usually do a trip once a year to the local council bring centre, it's free to dispose of, same with old paint.

Hmm maybe I need to check the t&cs of the nearest place. Be great if used oil was free there too.

even garages now have to pay e350 a collection for waste oil and no amount from 1 gallon to 1000 gallons and that service was free up to now.

Used engine oil from petrol engines can be carcinogenic ( used diesel engine oil not so much) - stuff blowing past the piston rings etc

Wash your hands before you go to the loo

I bring my oil here: http://www.sdcc.ie/services/recycling-waste/recycling-centres

If you tell them you've got engine oil they take it for free :)

I bring mine to the recycling centre in Liosbán Industrial Estate. They take it free.

My foreman tells us the opposit, the diesel particles suspended in the oil is what makes it harmful. Could be wrong but said I'd throw it in there.

Just got a 20 litre drum yesterday from my local Chinese take away. As per my OP, will fill and drop it off.

More so posting this as a tip if anyone is looking for a way to get a large drum for free!

Only question I don't suppose they care if its mixed as in veg oil and motor oil? What do they do with the stuff, I know they recycle it but for what !

Best check with your local centre if they will accept a drum.
If they think you're a business they may charge you (this is mainly for larger drums)

The local one at least only allows non-commercialised cars to come in. You can drive in with a car or van (with no company logos or text) and dump whatever is in your boot. They don't check what kind of container you have :)

Didn't think of that. Was purely for convenience to just drop the drum down rather than old oil containers.

Do people have to pay to dispose of used veg oil? I was wondering if it was hard got, was thinking of converting a car to run on it.

The one thing I've learned about councils... consistency isn't their thing. Seems round here there is a nominal limit of 10L max combined waste motor oil and veg oil, + max 2 oil filters per standard "civic amenity admission charge".
You can dump more but at a cost per litre.

In reality I've probably done 15L at a time as part of general dump run with no hassle. And to be honest I've been dumping the oil filters with the general household waste... never occurred to me to do anything different :-(

 omg not with general waste please remember waste oil in filter is hazardous and caustic, the more we try and save the planet the better it is for the next generation.

next time at a recycling centre its worth a look to see what and where things go,paints, oils, pesticides etc all have their own home and not in landfill.:D

i forgot to mention we had a friend who took the barrels of waste oil for his waste oil burner and it was great in the winter meant we cleared out stored waste oil.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,569 ✭✭✭Special Circumstances

I'm soooo dubious about those waste oil burners, they sound like little dioxin factories! (says he who used to throw out filters in the normal bin)

Wasn't a waste oil burner that led to all that pork being recalled / pig cull at one stage due to dioxins?

I pour it down the neighbours drain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,186 ✭✭✭cletus

Id normally pour it down the neighbours drain all right, but during the winter its too cold, so I put it down the bathroom sink. Tried the toilet, but it leaves an awful mess on the toilet brush

Ok back to actual helpful stuff before some no0b pour it down a drain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,704 ✭✭✭Cheensbo

<unhelpful stuff removed, see my post above...biko >

I tend to save it up for a while and give it to a local lad for his waste oil burner. Loves it, but doesn't love the smell of the gear & diff oils - who would!

    Edit: Oops, sorry biko :O

The main problem there was that they were burning toxic oil for cooling transformers (illegal) and also the system was leaking smoke onto the food. There wasn't a cull. No live pigs were contaminated. Pork products were recalled and destroyed.
