I was looking at a car on autotrader based in the uk this week,Owner saying it has 46,000 miles but the last mot in may 2016 is showing 71,000 miles.
I contacted him about this and he has stated that kwik fit have got it wrong (twice)and recorded the mileage in kilometres. Is this possible? The car is showing 71,000 this year, last years test is not there at all and 2014 test is showing 51,000.

he has since put up pictures of an invoice dated june 2015 with 40,000 miles on it but he also has now hidden the plate reg,car is a bmw by the way.

I have no intention on buying this car,was way overpriced also, apparently has full bmw history, just wondered was it possible that km's were used in the uk by accident as you see this excuse used here abit

You can switch the digital odometer between miles and km on most BMWs.

does it said 40 000 miles instead 40 000 km?

We have cars with both in Ireland to be fair. In the uk it's just miles used.

But if car odometer can be switched to km easily (with a button or something) maybe owner preferred to have it that way, and MOT recoded the reading as miles even though they were kilometres really.
    Possible.

I remember my sister buying a Citroën C3 recently and getting suspicious of cars which listed the odometer in kms despite the car being older than the change over (2005?) anyway turns out it was a case that when you switch the digital speedometer from mph to kph the odometer changes over as well.

    This too shall pass.

    Possible.

His first name is Wolfgang so maybe he likes km's:)

Could be doing regular continental driving so has the mph on the analogue speedo and the digital readout in kms?
Would this cause the odometer to change to kms?
