Attic insulation under attic water tanks

I've a cold attic and will soon be laying my earthwool insulation between the joists. What should I be doing under the water tanks - leave un-insulated to prevent them freezing up?

You need the tanks to be wrapped on the sides and top with insulation.

In theory if your wrapping of the tanks is perfect and to the same standard as your attic insulation you shouldn't need insulation under them.

In practice though I'd insulate right across under them every time and insulate them separately. If you are worried about it being very cold in the attic a separate single heater working on a frost stat is sometimes used in commercial projects.
