Did Russia tell 40 million citizens to fake evacuate for the lulz?

...or are we so caught up in the US election news cycle that people have not noticed a dangerous escalation of the situation in Syria??

Surely an evacuation of 40 million people from your cities is a pretty expensive logistical challenge? US and Russia going to come in to the military conflict?

Seems to be getting serious according to some sources with dictats going either way.

Putin is very forward though - he says we don't seem to realise just how dangerous the situation is.

Or maybe everything is fine outside the media bubble?

    I think we are doomed.

All indications are it's pretty serious. Interesting to note a lot of the western populace are fed up their leaderships nonsense and have absolutely no appetite for war and would prefer if Assad was kept in power which the Russians are backing.

I can't fathom why the United States are so anti Assad. Surely keeping him in power is the lesser of two evils.

Change of US Guard- makes sense when you look at the possibility of Donald Trump getting into power. We're all pretty much screwed if he does as he'll play into Putin's plan- today he's feeling pussy, tomorrow he'll feel like one.

It's a useful drill in any event.

See if everyone makes it to the assembly point.
And there's an orderly roll call.

Two British warships are shadowing an aircraft carrier and other Russian naval ships as they pass the UK on their way to Syria.
The carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and its task force are on a course to sail through the North Sea and English Channel.

In a sign of the escalating tensions with Russia, UK Defence Secretary today warned Moscow: 'When these ships near our waters we will man-mark them every step of the way. We will be watching as part of our steadfast commitment to keep Britain safe.'

    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-37719847

This is a major deployment by the Russians. The Russian Northern fleet is on its way to Syria. Its fairly obvious they are about to unleash an even greater force to attack the rebels in Aleppo and defeat them. And probably they are there as a warning to the west not to intervene. The ships will take about 2 weeks to arrive.

Wouldn't their Black Sea Fleet have gotten their faster?
Or did they just want a few photos of the White Cliffs on the way?

Power projection! If Murica can send ships all around the world, then the Russians will show they can do similar. The DailyMail are creaming themselves with the thought of a possible conflict between the Russians and the Royal Navy.

    That's funny.

Trump has called for diplomacy with Russia and improving business relations.

Clinton has called for a no-fly zone in Syria which would put the US into direct conflict with Russia. She has also said she will stand up to Putin over Ukraine.

Yet you are worried about Trump...

They cant rule the country by proxy with Assad in power. They already rule Egypt, Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan by proxy, mainly to loot these countries of there resources and place military bases there.

There's no reason for europe to not support Putin in his defence of Assad. It's either that or more American induced anarchy and mass migration.

Funny thing is multiple movies have been made about the end of the world, nuclear war etc starting in the middle east.

    Just watch from 1.15...

This US Russia thing is getting really old. Strip away all nukes and let them at it. The world would really be a better place without them.

Anybody see the new Adam Curtis film on the BBC iplayer?, really goes into the subject of this hyped up fear mongering gibberish we're pathetically being pushed to endure

Make America Get Out of Here

Yeah, an adorable little charmer. I just loved when he gassed all those civilians recently.

Of course it's also been reported that the US backed Islamist head choppers used chemical bombs. And of course the us and its Saudi allies are bombing Yemen, to little or no condemnation. Similarly as the Iraqis attack Mosul we won't hear much about their atrocities.

Some head choppers good, if pro US, other head choppers bad.

Saddam was a bad man too, used chemicals too, and getting rid of him was a disaster.

It's in European interests to break with the US and side with Putin.

You forget human nature. If the US is not the foremost power someone else will be. At least US is democracy. How would you like a China controlled world?

How about a multi lateral world. It's unusual to have a single world power and it won't last.

Unfortunately all sides are at it. Al-Nusra have been using them aswell and we all know who is on their side. There are no good guys in this war. I think the proof is in the pudding that it's better for us in Europe if the dictators were left in their place.

That could be true at any point in time though. The middle east is where world changing events happen. Farming, civilization, religion. We're obsessed with the place, just when you think it doesn't matter anymore it manages to find a way back into the limelight.

Yes and Trump is not a man to forget a slight. He only says nice things about Putin because Putin has said nice things about him. Clinton on the other hand thinks it's a good idea to try and emasculate Putin which only exacerbates the problem and makes it impossible for him to come to terms with her without losing face.

I saw something today that the President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has denounced the US in favor of building closer ties with Russia and China. Is that something to be concerned about? The idea of Russia and China together would be a huge buffer for the West.

This guy is a total fool. Such a small insignificant country. It just shows how stupid he is that he would voice allegiance to one superpower over the other. Why not have good diplomatic relations with them all. What an idiot.

Yup, with perfect hindsight and a purely Machiavellian outlook that makes sense

In reality though, it's bad doing business with repressive and backward regimes, but to actively support them while they are slaughtering their own citizens on an industrial scale is a step too far for most countries

The US has been doing business with repressive and backward regimes for as long as they have been a superpower. Those of us living in the west are naturally predisposed to see them as the good guys because of their huge projection of soft power, like movies, TV shows etc. When was the last time you watched something that portrayed a Russian or Chinese as the good guys? It's subtle cultural brainwashing and social media, Internet control is simply a progression.

I actually prefer this one. Movie takes through events quite well. I'm surprised one of these has not been made in more than 20 years? I suppose this reflects the fact people don't seem as concerned these weapons still exist in vast numbers.

But as Putin said people should be more aware that this can happen, that people don't realise that a few US or Russian aircraft shot down (or even one) can spiral totally out of control so quickly. Trump's idiotics are more important I suppose for the general public.

I'd like to see a much more public movement for disarmament because let's be honest - it's only a matter of time before some lunatic uses a nuclear weapon. Stupid will always win in the end.
