Just wondering, I've looked up citizens info, but doesn't directly answer my query.

14 year old car, had been paying quarterly as wasn't sure how long the car is going to drive on

Just wondering if I paid for a years road tax and the head gasket or something more serious that rendered the car useless and uneconomic to repair can one claim back a refund of the motor tax paid in advance for the remaining months on it?

And how would you get proof it's being scrapped? What if you wanted to sell the parts off it?

You get a certificate of destruction from the scrapper.

Selling off some of the parts has no affect.

If you sell everything incl shell then no you can't get the balance of your tax paid.

    From https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/staticContent.do?page=faq

Can I apply for a Motor Tax Refund?
13A. Refunds are normally issued where a vehicle is scrapped (by an Authorised Treatment Facility), stolen or exported. They are not issued where a vehicle has been sold. There must be a full three calendar months of unexpired tax remaining on the disc for a refund application to be considered.

All applications for a refund of motor tax, irrespective of whether you taxed online or at your local Motor Tax Office, must be made to your local motor tax office. You will need to complete Form RF120 get it witnessed and stamped by a member of An Garda Síochána, and then forward it to your local motor tax office. Form RF120 is available at your local motor tax office or can be downloaded under the Motor Tax Forms link at the homepage.

So if there's less than 3 full months left on it then no refund, but a refund will be given if you've paid for 12 months and car goes bust say 6 months in for example?

AFAIK, you can only get a refund for the same amount that you can buy the tax - 3,6, or 12 months. You'd only get 12 if you applied for a refund before that tax period actually begins, after that, 6 months.

It's pro rata, So if you paid for a years tax today the 19th October and the car was scrapped Tomorrow then you go to the tax office with the RF form, proof of destruction, theft or export and you will get back 11 months tax. You ignore the month in which the refund claim is made.

I was in ta xoffice recently and overheard a similair conversation. I think you can go into taX offic and declare your car off the road for X amount of time and get paid tax refunded, the refunt need to be >90 or 120 and you need to return your tax disk, i think there also an adminstration fee
