I can't walk across a stage and shake some bureaucrat's hand. It's too monarchical! I'm supposed to treat him as if he's not just another person. It's all about the college and not me - not exactly a chance to feel unique, or express yourself.

I couldn't really picture someone like Neil Young or Bon Jovi doing it! Anyway, I'll go along to the ball later in the night as it'll be a last chance for a college one night stand!

Congrats, I'd say go. I enjoyed mine. Now the ceremony was a bit drawn out and that but it was great to meet everyone again, before they were locked.

Na, that gals have to be locked as their excuse for me to ride em! They'd feel slutty otherwise.

Go. You're not important enough for anyone to notice your protest and you're not special enough to have too many of these ceremonies in your life.

In other words, it's time to grow up and not turn down things you might regret later in life. Give your parents the photo and give them the chance to be proud, it might mean a lot to them. Then thank them for their support.

Judging from this post alone, that's not why they have to be locked. Ugh.

In that case I'd be strongly advising you to go, do some groundwork beforehand.

Tbh....I never went to my own graduation thing (admittedly very different to a college one)

Though don't think my parents minded....they were slightly numb to them after going to all the sister's ones over the years

I didn't go to my last one, but they enjoyed being there for the first.

I'm the baby too, I'm sure there's a certain amount of celebration fatigue that sets in by the time they get to the last one(s). :)

I'll do that bit, but I'm not shaking the president's hand.

That's very childish. The President is shaking your hand to congratulate you on completing your studies, and you're going to look like a bad-mannered brat if you don't accept those congratulations with good grace.

Go for it though, it's edgy to be obnoxious.

I could understand not wanting to wear the hat/gowns thing or bother with the whole ceremony thing....

Bit to go through with all that and not the shaking bit....unless you've personal beliefs/issues with the president makes the protest pointless

Na, I'd feel pretty stupid showing up to a graduation if my sole reason was to talk to some particular girl and waiting around and not getting the chance. Getting to shag one isn't that important to me! and that's why I'm cool - too cool for a graduation.

That's hardly going to encourage me to go? It's not a protest and I don't care if anyone notices. It's for me that I'm not going.

It's not an insult, it's the way life is. Very few people are special, you only think you are when you're young and self absorbed enough to think your pointless protests mean something.

One day you'll cringe at the kind of sentiments you've expressed here. How soon that day comes around depends on how well you mature.

I forgot to go to my graduation. I put it cleanly out of my mind and my college post was getting sent to an address I wasn't staying at. I was at work bouncing at some stupid Oktoberfest yoke only five minutes from UCC and was wondering why people get walking by dressed to the nines in the middle of the day until I saw a friend from my course who was asking where I was and then I noticed a load of missed calls.

To be honest I found college a load of sh*te, I was working nearly full time and had a busy enough life outside of it. I went back at 21 after living in England for three years and the whole lifestyle of it did nothing for me. To my recollection I didn't even get a copy of my degree and haven't needed it for anything or relied on it since.

It would have been nice for my mam to be at it maybe but she didn't seem too bothered about it.

I've only gone to one of my graduations. I just couldn't be bothered. I went to the masters to give my mum a day out and that's it.

I have my graduation next Monday. I am looking forward to it I am booking into a hotel for a few nights for it. I worked damn hard over the 4 years to get the piece of paper there was certainly times along the way I thought I would never finish it. I won't take the day too serious but it's a day out should be a bit of a laugh and a chance to put a nice finish to the college chapter in my life.

Ya see, this guy was cool because he didn't go. So cool that's his friends were talking about him in the street on the day itself.

Too cool to be a good lad, and go along for the pat on the head.

I bet he got all the girls. A bouncer and all! Obviously too cool for discos too!

Waste of time, should have just stayed at home and stuck a hawk on my head.

Funny you should mention that, I laid the pavers in the pavilion the ceremony was held in, summer job from my secondary school days. Laying pavers is a lot like having sex, if you're sand isn't properly whacked and level it will end in disaster

I was thinking more attention seeker

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
