Hi I just today closed a long drawn out severance agreement with my last employer of 14 years.

I assumed today when they posted the cheques to my solicitor that they would also send my p45 but they didn't.

They are now saying they will email it in the morning? I'm wondering is that okay.

Also do you have to wait four weeks before claiming for tax back? Thanks.

It's ok so long as either the email is encrypted or the pdf file is password protected.

If neither of those it true, they may as well write it on the back of a postcard and sent it to you by snail mail.

But why would you immediately be entitled to a tax refund, if you're just about to get a P45? After all, presumably, your last employer managed to calculate your PAYE correctly!

In 4 weeks time, assuming that you haven't found new employment, you can apply for a tax refund using this form:- http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/forms/p50.pdf

Check that the figures on P45 match the figures on your final payslip

The only reason I can think of that it wouldn't be ok is if they were emailing to an address provided by the company that you may or may not have future access to.

Tax documents are a matter of public record (within reason) so it's not as if it needs to be hidden.

Yes, you must wait 4 weeks before claiming a refund - as was advised, that would be a bit pointless tho as you will not have accrued any tangible refund in 4 weeks. Normally, you do it the next tax year.

Thanks for all the replies. Good to know on the p45 I always thought you had to receive a hard copy.

The next year? I don't know much about it but I was told to do it this year before the year is up and that because it was near the end of the year it was better for me because I have paid so much tax this year.

Again I'm on a steep learning curve so apologies if some my questions seem a bit daft.

Yes you have paid loads of tax this year but what you are due as a refund is calculated on the entire year. After 4 weeks, the refund will not be much.

Have you applied for JSB in the interim?

Ah okay well yes that makes sense really.

No I'm going to do that tomorrow which I'm sure will be a bit of an eye opening experience, hopefully I won't be on it to long but you never know.
