Mix of internal and external insulation

    Hi Folks,

We've just moved into a 70's Semi-D and looking at options to improve insulation.

From a performance point of view exterior insulation seems to come out on top. This would also save space inside. The only think putting me off is that our side passage currently has just enough clearance for our wheelie bins, adding 100mm + render to the side walls would mean we'd never get a bin or even a lawnmower round the side of the house.

Our front exterior is currently red brick downstairs and rendered finish upstairs. Would we be mad to do external insulation on the front and rear walls with internal on the sides, or even external on first floor and internal on the ground?

The first builder we had out to quote had no interest in putting external insulation over brickwork.

The boundary wall and side wall of the house aren't parallel so the pinch point for the bins would only be the first metre or two, the rear of the side passage actually has plenty of room.
