    Hi
I would like to import vw transporter crew cab. I been on revenue web site and I cannot find the 100 % answer. I e mailed NCT and they just reverted me to revenue .

I think to clear it would be 200 euro but not sure. Then there is the road tax. If I do not have a vat number I think will have to tax it private and pay 600 euro plus a year and not 333 euro.
If this were to be the case would I have to pay large VRT rates like a car or would it still be a commercial ? Its all pretty unclear to me. There are few threads about but I think they might be out of date.
    Good info be much appreciated

These things are quite confusing nowadays, but I'd be pretty confident that it would be 13.3% VRT rather than a flat €200. As long as it's an N1 classified commercial it will be taxed on engine size for private road tax, so it depends what engine size it is, rather than the emissions - which is a good thing, as emissions are probably quite high.

Have you checked insurance? Seems to be an issue insuring vans privately.

    Hi ROR.
Thanks for your reply. Since I have spoken to my insurance broker. It would seem from general inquiry with them my current commercial underwriter wont insure a crew cab and wont insure private either . This system here all seems very wrong. I am not trying to be sneaky with revenue or insurance . I just want to have more than 3 seats and carry some stuff of my own. 5 / 6 seats max . If people have 6 seater nissan qashqai full of kids is greater risk.
    man !

the Insurance Company suspicion is that you would be using it commercially which is why they wont cover it privately.

I assume they also think the opposite on insuring it as a Commercial!

Best bet might be to look for a Caravelle / Vito type people carrier, and take the rear most row of seats out. Still lots of seating space for 6 people, and plenty of load area, just not as safe with no bulkhead behind the passengers.

Should be easier to insure privately, but may still run in to problems as they aren't the norm. Tax could be expensive as they are emissions rather than engine size based (08 onwards) for Road Tax.

    Hi

If it's a commercial vehicle then the VRT is 13.5% of whatever revenue value it at. At your VRT inspection they may give you the figure straight away or they may tell you that they need to consult with revenue and contact you with the figure. You then pay it. If you don't like it you can appeal with evidence as to why you feel they have overvalued it, but you have to pay it first.

The NCT bit is just to get it assessed for VRT. Make sure to make an appointment in plenty of time to get it done inside 30 days of importing. Make sure you have all the documents they ask for with you when you attend the NCT center for your VRT inspection.

You will then have to do a CVRT in order to tax it. This has to be done annually and costs €111 IIRC.

To tax it commercially you will need to prove to your local tax office (by whatever means they dictate) that you are using it commercially.

Private tax on a commercial vehicle is based on engine size, so a 1.9 vivaro/trafic/primastar is about €670 for a year.

Sorry to hijack thread but have a question to do with this, i see a 12crewcab in the north for sale not including vat .If i import a car i don't have to pay if it is more than 6 months old etc and has paid vat elsewhere. If i import a 5 year old crewcab that was used as a commercial in the north and i am not vat registered do i now have to pay the vat on top of the vrt

To the best of my knowledge, no you don't. You pay x in the north, this includes VAT and you then just pay the VRT.

I think you can claim the Vat back aswell from the HM Revenue after you buy.
