You're getting it cheap for a reason, they're thirsty, slow, the badge won't help (it was also sold as the Opel Antara) and €1200p/a (?) to tax means resale will be difficult.

Surely can't be €1200 to tax if its a post 08 diesel?

not €1200 to tax, think its €700 and with 101k miles guy wants €2800 plus vrt

The missus drives a 7 seater one. Its a 2007 so tax is €710. Ours is 150 bhp and certainty not slow as a boy racer who tried to act the maggot can attest to. They can be thirsty on urban driving but most big vehicles are. On a long spin it's actually pretty decent. Not a premium badge but we got ours cheap enough and it suits our needs.

Do a history check on it. Most of those were sold to taxi fleets in the UK

Not every post 2007 diesel vehicle had cheap tax, some still had high emissions.

OP, the Captiva is basically a rebadged Opel/Vauxhall Antara, engines are made by Fiat. They are not great at doing anything and were never great sellers but it really depends on what you expect from it. By the way you need to double check the motor tax on it as the Opel/Vauxhall Antara with the same engine costs €1200 to tax on the Co2 system as per example below:

VRT could also be pricey enough so compare the landed price with the prices of similar Captivas and Antaras for sale now here as they really are not loved here.

so is this the same engine as the early insigna's as that engine was not great from what i hear

According to Parkers they were equipped with the CDTI and VCDI engines from GM, both 2.0. CO2 figures are different but both fall into €1200 tax bracket.

vrt on the cdti model is 3028 and 2300 on the other, near the price of the car itself, just crazy

VRT has nothing to do with the cost of the car in another country, it is based on what Revenue think the same car is worth here as a percentage rate of what it's emissions fall under. There are savings on a good number of cars but in some cases cars like this seldom are worth importing.

Getting a good deal because it looks like near impossible to shift in the future, unless you run it into the ground.

Thats a bit harsh ain,t it. Fiat have made some really good cars in there time and good petrol and diesel engines too and they also make cars that are reliable and fun. New Fiats are now also well built but not all old Fiats were badly built either.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I work in an Opel Dealer and can recall that they all had to Registered before July 2008 so they could be taxed by cc rather than emissions.
Post July 08 they were €1200 to tax based emissions, this should give you a Red Light re Fuel Economy , they were really a Daewoo that were badged Opel and Chevrelot, the Opel came in a five seat where as the Chevrolet was also available in a seven seat.
Opel did not have a "MPV " for Europe so some genius thought this would be a stop gap till they produced their own for Europe.
They were built in Korea, the "Fiat Engine" is not accurate.
Part of their problem is trying to match an unsuitable Engine to the generic Body.
They are so troublesome that Opel Dealers dread them coming in to the Service Dept as they are nearly impossible to get sorted.

My comments about not being great was about the Captiva and Antara in general, not the engine under the bonnet.
