    Hi there,

Me and my dad are thinking of insulating our attic. Absolutely nothing there at the moment. Any idea about costs, tips etc? How much would it cost to get professionally done.

its a 2 bed terraced house.

Get 3 quotes. That will get you an average price for professionally done n
If you want advice on what you can do yourself, people need more info, photos etc

What joists are there, spacing, services?
Do you still want storage access afterwards?

Also whatever way you go about it if there's nothing there at the moment it'll be some of the best money you've ever spent.

Attic insulation is very cheap compared to the benefit you get from it.

Post up some pictures as kceire says.

Cheers lads. Need to get a leaking chimney sorted first so will be a while before we start it. Was just looking for some pointers. Will return and post pictures/info when actually ready to start.

Is it important to get it professionally done though? I read that you need to seal it and stuff to stop thermal damp spots. Is that something would need a professional for or something you could do with a bit of work.

That's why we asked for pictures. Depending on how your attic is laid out and the type and location of the proposed insulation you might be able to do a good chunk of it yourself if you are careful and conscientious.

Doing a similar project this weekend.

Ignoring price which is the better option between earthwool and Xtratherm foil backed boards (plus airfoam) for between the ceiling joists. Is there a danger that if the boards aren't cut perfectly, it's a huge waste of PIR boards and that earthwool or Isover G3 would have been better.

Picture attached of the attic. It's a very old house and won't be converting anytime soon (or ever) so presume it's a cold roof solution I should be looking at, and to leave 5cm between the insulation and rafters for the roof to breath.

Planning to use XTratherm WalkR boards as the final layer in either case.

Any other thoughts/ideas appreciated based on the picture. Note I don't know what the white stuff is under the tiles - presumably some sort of felt but no idea whether breathable or now.

the white stuff is lime parging it was used before roofing felt became available it is bonded directly to the slates
