Checking out an ancestral connection who was a doctor I found a newspaper report from 1825 which lists 40 names of Irish people who had graduated in medicine from Edinburgh university. Any idea why so many Irish would be studying in Edinburgh at that time?
Can anyone suggest sources for more info on graduates of Edinburgh

I'd imagine the college itself would have kept records of all alumni.

Many of the Irish medical schools in 1825, TCD and RCPI, would not have made RC students feel at home.

Also Edinburgh has long been a centre of excellence in medical training.

For information on training, Thom's directories, medical lists always showed where a doctor trained, and usually date of registration.

Edinburgh had a huge reputation back then for medicine that lasted certainly into the late 1800's - one Cork family (Church of Ireland) I researched had a son who started medicine in Queens College Cork (now UCC) and continued at Edinburgh, graduating in the '70's (need to check date). He was destined for the Indian Medical Service, and was invalided home soon after (and made a wealthy marriage!). I've only researched his post-qualification life, so cannot help with sources..

    Thanks for replies-

Yes I found a database on Edinburgh Uni website, unfortunately just gives name and year started/finished. No parents name or address etc.

That makes sense, the man I am checking was RC

Yes, I see that on the Uni's website. The alumni database gives over 400 med graduates in 1825, so they were really churning them out.
