I got an email saying Vodafone are putting up their broadband price by 5 euro a month. That is not acceptable. Broadband here was already too expensive. I want to drop Vodafone. Where are the cheaper alternatives?

Hmmm, I'm a customer of theirs and I didn't get an email.

I recently renewed my contract at a rate of €45 for unlimited broadband plus free calls to the UK.

I'd be really annoyed if they increase the price after me just renewing, I'll keep an eye out for an email.

When I looked around last month, Vodafone were the best price, Sky were coming in a close second.

Loads of threads already. All providers are going up. You won't find a saving.

50 euros a month for broadband and calls is unacceptable.
Im not going to be giving them that.
Prices should be going down not up.
    This is total bs.
I may drop broadband altogether then.

I`m on the same and got an email today about a €5 increase. You have 30 days to cancel if you arent happy.

I`ve had a look and cant find anyone cheaper, even with the increase.

That's the problem, there is no competition in Ireland.
When one raises the price they all do.
    It's the same as insurance.
There should be legislation against this kind of crap.

This is only because they buy from open eir. You're right though, they all use open eir so where's the competition?

    ...Soon

If you read their T&Cs that someone posted in one of the many other threads on this topic they didn't increase the prices on their Lightspeed service (FTTH from SIRO) so at least it's not a blanket increase across their whole product set.

But yeah you are right, VM upped their prices earlier this year so it's much easier for OpenEir to follow suit now. I think the prices are reasonably fair and comparable to other countries with a similar standard of living to we have. The value you get for money when you don't have access to cable, FTTH or VDSL is obviously really crap but at the end of the day you are living in a remote area where it costs a hell of a lot of money to roll out to.

From this report http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2016/10/study-224bn-needed-cover-eu-homes-1gbps-broadband.html they mention that the cost to per home is E2200, hell of a lot of upfront spend for any company to outlay and when you are in huge debts like Eir it's even tougher to raise that money.

Add to that the fact that not every home will take up the service then it takes a long time to make the money back when OpenEir are charging wholesale prices of around E25/month. Let's say 10 years plus to recoup their investment given they will have other huge costs out of their E25/month. In order to get good broadband service wholesalers have 2 options, pay very large upfront cost of E2200 or pay larger monthly costs. They never go with the first option so you are left with the 2nd one.

Anyway it's easy for people to give out about prices but from working in the industry it's not as profitable as people think.

Its not even a real increase, its just a balancing.
