Gift Tax - Gift from Foreigner with no connection to Ireland

    Hi All,

I read through about 30 posts on Gift Tax here but couldn't find one that answered this questions.

There is lots of info on gift tax within Ireland, but little on getting gifts from others.

If a foreign friend wanted to give me a gift of, say, Euro30,000, would I have to pay tax on this? Assuming they do everything required in their country (Canada in this case)?

It's not clear how CAT or Gift Tax applies in this case, but perhaps I've just missed it.

    Thanks in advance!

If you are resident or ordinarily resident in Ireland you are liable for Gift Tax, no matter where the donor is resident.

However, there are tax free amounts called Thresholds, and they depend on your relationship with the donor, and whether or not you have already received gifts/inheritances from anyone from the same class threshold.

And there it is, right there! "whether or not the disponer is resident or domiciled in Ireland". Thanks!
