I have a quick question. This has probably been done to death on here but I am currently living and working in NI. I am buying a car up here, and am wondering if I am down home will I run into bother at a customs checkpoint when I pull out an Irish licence?

    Hi OP,

If you can show that you are actually living up there you'll be grand.

A DVLA tax disc, MOT or Insurance disk from UK should convince Garda.

On the flip side, if your there for an extended period, will you not be required to obtain a UK licence?

There are no discs on a UK car currently and there never have been MOT or insurance discs.

op: carry some NI correspondence such as bank statements or utility bills.

You may get some hassle, just ask all those people who were caught for VRT fines despite having NI cars, NI insurance, NI tax, and documents in their car showing they had an NI address.

Of course, most of these were conning the system and actually residing in the RoI, but keeping their mammy's address so they could drive NI cars, and were caught out.

As long as you can prove you live in NI for most of the week and are only travelling home for the weekend for example, you should have nothing to worry about.
