Returning to work - do I leave tax credits with my husband?

I have been staying at home with my children for the last three years and I'm about to return to work part-time - 15 hours a week.

In that time we have been assessed jointly and my husband has had my tax credits and I've also been in receipt of the home carer's tax allowance (which I will inform revenue to stop). Obviously my husband is the main breadwinner and my salary will not be huge.

Is there any reason not to leave my tax credits with him? Is there any benefit in me using them myself?

Ring up the revenue. My wife was in the same postinion as you only a few weeks ago. She was coming home with SFA after 15 hours work sop she rang them up and they did some taxation wizardry. I kept my home carers tax allowance and she moves her tax band. I dont think either of us are out of pocket.

Maybe it depends on who you talk to in there, but we've never had an issue with anyone from revenue.

It depends on what your income will be between now and the end of the tax year on 31 December. Your situation will be different for 2017 as you will hopefully be looking at 12 months of employment. Call Revenue or send a query through my enquiries with details of your and your spouses projected earnings.

Also to note, your spouse can not have all your tax credits as your paye credit is non transferable.
